Startled by Bai Hantian's sudden anger, Lanyou glanced at Ling Chunann with a mixture of the previous friendliness and something more, before smiling warmly to smooth things over, "Ah Han, look at you, scaring little Qi."
"Sorry," Bai Hantian said to Ling Chunann, "I've dressed his wound, but he's lost a lot of blood and might need some time to recover. I can't do much about the internal injuries for now; he'll have to heal on his own."
"I'm truly grateful," Ling Chunann sincerely thanked.
"It's no trouble." Bai Hantian met Ling Chunann's gaze, then averted his eyes, clearing his throat, "I'll carry him down the mountain. There's a city nearby, and I know a divine doctor there who has opened a clinic."
"Alright." Ling Chunann nodded firmly, his eyes filled with gratitude towards Bai Hantian.
Bai Hantian's ears reddened under Ling Chunann's gaze, his actions of carrying the sect leader somewhat stiff.
Along the way, Ling Chunann casually engaged in conversation, and soon, Bai Hantian had inadvertently revealed much about himself.
Observing silently, 098 couldn't help but commend its host for skillfully employing beauty to win over Bai Hantian.
"I'm simply making the most of what I have, using the right strategy for the situation," Ling Chunann casually remarked to 098, explaining that the best way to deal with someone who values appearance is to conquer them with beauty.
Seeing the young alliance leader mesmerized to the point of forgetting his close female companion, 098 deeply agreed.
"098, can you see the favorability now?" Ling Chunann asked.
"Host, it doesn't show," 098 replied, "Maybe because Bai Hantian isn't the male lead?"
Ling Chunann shook his head without a word, spotting a small pit on the ground and stepping on it as they passed, "Ah!"
"Be careful." Bai Hantian, carrying the sect leader ahead, reached out to steady Ling Chunann, "It's getting dark, and the path is rough. Slow down and follow me."
"Thank you, Brother Bai." Ling Chunann, slightly embarrassed, tried to retract his hand but found it held even tighter, "Brother Bai?"
"I'll hold you as we walk, to prevent another fall," Bai Hantian offered.
"No, it's okay. I can see. I noticed Miss Lanyou wasn't walking very steadily; perhaps you should assist her," Ling Chunann suggested, his face reddening.
Since Ling Chunann's arrival, Lanyou, who had been largely ignored, now looked at him with even less favor, "No need. I can walk on my own, unlike some who can't even walk properly."
Ling Chunann felt awkward, "Miss Lanyou, I didn't mean..."
"Lanyou, why speak so of little Qi? He meant well," Bai Hantian, already won over by Ling Chunann, expressed his displeasure.
"I...he...I didn't mean..." Tears filled Lanyou's eyes, unable to understand how the man who once doted on her could change so quickly for someone else, even if that someone was more attractive. She took a deep breath, reminding herself that Ling Chunann was still a man and Bai Hantian couldn't possibly like him in that way.
As they walked, Lanyou, lost in thought, failed to notice a tree root on the ground and tripped.
Ling Chunann helped her up, "Be careful, Miss Lanyou."
After regaining her balance, Lanyou looked at Ling Chunann, "Thank you."
"You're welcome."
Ling Chunann internally commended, "It seems the quality of the female lead has slightly improved."
"..." 098 wondered if a simple thank you was enough to raise her quality, noting that her reaction was likely for Bai Hantian's benefit.
An hour later, the group finally entered the city.
Lanyou, lacking martial skills, was visibly exhausted and sweaty, while Ling Chunann pretended to be similarly fatigued. Bai Hantian, focused on Ling Chunann, suggested they rest while he and Ling Chunann would visit the doctor for their brother.
"I want to come with you, Brother Bai," Ling Chunann insisted.
Bai Hantian glanced at Ling Chunann, "Then, follow me. Lanyou, go to the inn first."
"I want to go too," Lanyou protested.
"No, little Qi is worried about his sick brother, and you wouldn't be of help. Rest at the inn for now," Bai Hantian decisively replied.
Lanyou didn't persist, agreeing to reserve rooms for them.
098 now understood what Ling Chunann meant by the female lead's improved quality; she was more tolerant and natural in her acting compared to the previous female leads who constantly opposed the protagonist. Indeed, Bai Hantian's attitude towards Lanyou softened considerably after hearing her willingness to cooperate.
The divine doctor, a handsome young man named Xue Zhiyi, was originally one of the female lead's admirers in the story. However, lacking martial skills and noble heritage, he didn't stand out among the other exceptional admirers and was quickly eliminated from the competition.
"Divine doctor, my brother will be okay, right?" Ling Chunann eagerly asked after Xue Zhiyi finished his examination.
"There's no threat to his life. I'll prescribe some medicine for his external injuries, which should heal in a month. However, his internal injuries are severe, and he's at risk of deviating from his cultivation. I can only prescribe some medicine to soothe his meridians, but a complete cure is beyond my abilities. He'll have to recover on his own."
"Thank you," Ling Chunann expressed his gratitude.
"You're welcome."
As Xue Zhiyi was about to say more, Bai Hantian, feeling a sense of crisis, abruptly interrupted, "The prescription is ready. Let's take him back to the inn, and we'll trouble Doctor Xue to revisit tomorrow for a follow-up."
"Of course," Xue Zhiyi agreed, "Take care."
For the next three days, Ling Chunann played the role of a devoted brother, tending to his 'brother' tirelessly, never leaving his side except to prepare his medicine.
Bai Hantian noticed all this, his admiration for Ling Chunann, a stranger turned friend who showed such loyalty and kindness, growing significantly.
One day, as Ling Chunann was returning to the room with medicine, 098 alerted him, "Host, he's awake!"
"Quiet, I can hear you," Ling Chunann whispered.
"Understood," 098 lowered its voice, "Host, he's about to open the door."
"Got it." Ling Chunann then opened the door.
Despite having lost his memory, the sect leader's instinctual sense of danger kicked in as Ling Chunann entered, causing him to step back. However, unsteady due to his injuries, he stumbled.
"Brother, you're awake!" Ling Chunann exclaimed with joy, quickly entering the room to put the medicine aside and help the man, "Why are you out of bed? Your wounds haven't healed yet. The doctor said you need to rest in bed for at least ten days."
The man looked down at Ling Chunann, his expression blank, until he was seated on the bed and then asked, "Who are you?"
"You've forgotten me?" Ling Chunann was incredulous, "I'm your brother."
The man looked at Ling Chunann for a moment longer, seeming to believe him, and then asked, "And who am I?"
"You're Xiao Yuan, and I'm Xiao Qi. We're brothers. Have you forgotten all this?" Ling Chunann asked.
Bai Hantian, hearing the noise, came over. Seeing Xiao Yuan awake, he warmly greeted, "Xiao brother, you're awake."
"Uh-huh," Xiao Yuan nodded, "And you are?"
"Brother, he's Bai Hantian, the one who saved us," Ling Chunann introduced.
"Thank you," Xiao Yuan expressed his gratitude, then turned back to Ling Chunann, "Can you tell me what happened?"
As Ling Chunann effortlessly narrated a coherent, albeit fabricated, story to the amnesiac sect leader, 098 sighed, almost convinced by the tale if not for knowing Ling Chunann's true identity in this world as the son of a prince, and an only child at that.
With Bai Hantian corroborating, Xiao Yuan had no reason to doubt Ling Chunann's story.
Xiao Yuan's recovery was surprisingly swift, though he remained unable to engage in martial arts due to his internal injuries.
098 queried why Ling Chunann didn't use his healing abilities to treat Xiao Yuan, to which Ling Chunann solemnly replied that he couldn't disrupt the balance of this world with powers that didn't exist within it.
As Bai Hantian's attention increasingly focused on Ling Chunann, Lanyou began to warm up to him, making for a harmonious group dynamic over the following days. However, due to plot changes, Lanyou showed more warmth towards Xue Zhiyi than in the original story, and without Ling Chunann's interference, the divine doctor found himself falling for her again.
One day, as Lanyou returned, Ling Chunann, sitting on the steps of the courtyard, called out to her. Initially showing disdain upon hearing him, Lanyou's expression quickly changed to a warm smile, "What are you doing sitting here? It's easy to catch a cold sitting on the ground."
"Thank you for your concern, Miss Lanyou," Ling Chunann smiled, standing up, "Brother Bai was looking for you just now. I was waiting here to let you know. Also, we're planning to head to Dong Yue the day after tomorrow, and..."
Before he could finish, Lanyou's façade of warmth exploded into fury. "All day long, 'Brother Bai this, Brother Bai that.' Don't you find it disgusting, always hanging around a man?"
Ling Chunann couldn't help but laugh inwardly at her outburst, thinking to himself how she must have been holding back her frustration for quite some time.
"...All because you keep provoking her," he thought.
Despite his internal amusement, Ling Chunann's face showed nothing but shock and panic. "Miss Lanyou, I didn't mean..."
"You with your androgynous look, you're just a fox spirit who seduces men wherever you go. It's revolting!" Lanyou's anger had clearly reached its peak. "I've tolerated you for a long time now. All you do is act cute around men. Don't you have any shame?"
Ling Chunann turned pale, "I didn't..."
Seeing Ling Chunann looking so hurt, Lanyou felt a surge of vindication for her long-suppressed anger. She scoffed and turned towards the house.
At that moment, a voice called out to her, "Wait."
