Ling Chunann descended the stairs to find Feng Cheng sitting on the sofa, his back habitually straight, his movements of serving tea meticulous, somehow adding a layer of seriousness to the act, making him seem more solemn than others. Upon seeing Ling Chunann, he set down his teacup and stood up, "You're here."
"Big brother," Ling Chunann greeted obediently with a nod.
Feng Cheng glanced at Shu Siyan, then back to Ling Chunann, and after a long pause, he continued, "How have you been recently?"
"Very well," Ling Chunann replied with a smile. "Big brother, is everything okay at home?"
"It's manageable. The parasites have been dealt with," Feng Cheng said.
At that moment, Shu Siyan turned and headed to the kitchen. Feng Cheng watched him leave and then said, looking in Shu Siyan's direction, "How is he?"
Following Feng Cheng's gaze, Ling Chunann's smile widened a bit, "He's very good."
Feng Cheng looked at him for a few more seconds, "Hmm, as long as he's good. Stay here, I'll go handle some matters and come back to meet you. Don't worry about home, I'm there."
"Okay," Ling Chunann obediently nodded. "Then, big brother, take care."
"Hmm," Feng Cheng responded and then said, "I'm leaving now."
"Wait," Ling Chunann called out to Feng Cheng, "Big brother, I have an amulet for you," he added, "I made it myself."
He handed over a small jade pendant hanging on a red string, fitting to be worn around the neck, looking quite like an amulet, albeit a bit ugly.
This was the second amulet Ling Chunann made during his interstellar cultivation journey, crafted to maximize his abilities through spiritual power, though it ended up looking unidentifiable. Compared to his first attempt, this one was actually more aesthetically pleasing, although the first one was given away to a man by Ling Chunann.
Feng Cheng accepted the pendant, his expression softening, attempting to smile at Ling Chunann but ultimately failed, pursing his lips instead and nodding before he left with big strides.
"Host, you just let him go like that?" 098 inquired, "And wasn't he supposed to pick you up?"
"Should I tie him up here?" Ling Chunann asked propping his chin, "Besides, I gave him the amulet. He won't die."
"What if he throws away your amulet because it's so ugly?" 098 remarked, considering Feng Cheng, a young master of a wealthy family, had seen all sorts of jewels and gems.
"You're actually mocking me! 098, you're becoming bolder," Ling Chunann said.
"I'm sorry, host. I was wrong!"
Back in the car, Feng Cheng looked at the pendant, its shape indiscernible but uniquely beautiful, and then wore it around his neck, tucking it inside his shirt.
He felt relatively at ease about Ling Chunann staying at Shu Siyan's place, considering there was no safer place in Qingcheng than by Shu Siyan's side, whereas the Feng family... He shook his head and started the car.
"Is everything settled?" Shu Siyan came out with a cup of tea, not at all surprised to see Feng Cheng had left.
"Yes," Ling Chunann smiled, "My big brother seems quite pleased with you."
Shu Siyan chuckled, "That's good." He reached out to pat Ling Chunann's head, "If you want to be with your family, I can have someone bring them over. It's relatively safe now, but it might not be so easy in the future."
Ling Chunann paused, "Let's talk about it later."
The cause of Feng Cheng's death in the original text was unclear to Ling Chunann; the narrative did not focus much on him. Moreover, in the original storyline, many members of the Feng family survived the apocalypse, except for Feng Cheng. There was only a mention by a servant of the Feng family lamenting, "If only the young master was still here."
From Ling Chunann's current understanding, Feng Cheng's demise was likely tied to the Feng family's burdens, and having the original host's complete memories, Ling Chunann could hardly find it in him to like any of those relatives.
The man who always refrained from contradicting Ling Chunann did not dwell on the topic, merely stating, "By the way, sweetheart, the hidden sword named Ye Feixiao you asked me to look for has been found. They're on their way back."
In less than half an hour, the doorbell rang. Ling Chunann opened the door to find four people standing outside: Yu Zhihang, two tall men in black suits, and a young man with clear, terrified eyes, obviously scared.
Seeing Ling Chunann, the two men in black suits bowed deeply at ninety degrees and said in unison, "Young master!"
Ling Chunann, witnessing the young man's fright jump, suppressed a laugh, cleared his throat, and said, "Thank you for your hard work, you may go back now."
"Yes, young master," the two men responded in unison, then glanced at the young man before turning to leave, causing the young man to shiver again.
"Hello, I am Feng Lan," Ling Chunann extended his hand.
The young man, still in shock, shook Ling Chunann's hand, "H-hello, I am Ye Feixiao." After saying this, he seemed to finally come to his senses, "What? Feng Lan?"
Ling Chunann showed a purely innocent smile, "It's Feng from Feng Jiang, Lan from Shan Lan."
"Oh, sorry, I have a game friend whose name sounds the same," facing Ling Chunann, Ye Feixiao seemed much more relaxed, and he smiled, "But she is a girl."
"I'm a boy."
"..."
Yu Zhihang, who was standing by, let out a hard-to-suppress snicker. Ling Chunann glanced at him, and Yu Zhihang promptly turned his back, waving his hand and heading towards his own apartment. He had rented a place in the same complex to treat Ling Chunann and found it convenient to stay.
"Let's go inside and talk," Ling Chunann suggested.
Still reeling from the shock of a close friend transforming from a cool and aloof sister to a boy, Ye Feixiao dumbly followed Ling Chunann into the living room.
"Sit, tea or juice?" Ling Chunann asked.
"Tea, please," Ye Feixiao responded, "Thank you."
"Sweetheart, the guest room is ready," Shu Siyan came down from upstairs, speaking softly to Ling Chunann, who was preparing tea.
"Okay," Ling Chunann turned to embrace Shu Siyan, "Yanyan, I want to talk to him alone."
Shu Siyan kissed Ling Chunann on the forehead, "Then I'll go cook."
After Shu Siyan left, Ling Chunann returned to the living room with the tea, "Here's your tea."
Ye Feixiao nodded, taking a cautious glance at Ling Chunann, still somewhat uncertain, "You're really Feng Lan?"
"Yes, Sister Xiu," Ling Chunann confirmed with a smile.
"But when you spoke in voice chat before, you sounded like a..." Ye Feixiao paused, "Voice changer?"
"Smart," Ling Chunann praised.
"Oh." Ye Feixiao fell silent for a while, his expression going through several changes.
098: "Host, isn't he angry?"
Ling Chunann: "No."
With the atmosphere this tense and yet not angry? 098 eyed Ye Feixiao's expressions nervously. Though Ye Feixiao looked harmless with his clear and innocent appearance, he was taller than Ling Chunann. If he decided to lash out, Ling Chunann might not be able to dodge.
Suddenly, Ye Feixiao stood up, preempting 098's alarm, and said, "You owe me candied hawthorns!"
098: "..."
Ling Chunann: "What?"
Ye Feixiao, touching on a sore spot, grimaced, "You don't understand. When we first formed our team, I bet with Big Dog that you were a 'demon sister', and he bet you were the real Sister Xiu."
"Until you turned on the microphone." Ye Feixiao covered his forehead, showing a pained expression, then returned to accusing, almost tearful, "You owe me five hundred candied hawthorns! Those were the fruits of an entire season's hard work, which I hadn't even had the chance to use on lolis before Big Dog scammed them all away. Worse still, he fed me one every half hour, feed his foot! I'm a grown man! Eating candied hawthorns doesn't make me call him uncle! Do you know? I was forced to eat his candied hawthorns for half a year!"
Ling Chunann: "I know." The original host's memory indeed had a candied hawthorn buff icon below Ye Feixiao's avatar every time he was targeted.
"..."
Watching the almost tearful young swordsman, 098 barely held back its laughter.
"You're not from around here, right?" Ling Chunann changed the subject.
"Ah, I'm from Tang City, came here to study in Qingcheng," Ye Feixiao naturally followed Ling Chunann's change of topic, "I'm in my senior year. I was planning to go back to my hometown to find a job, but you know how things are now," he shrugged.
"Yes," Ling Chunann nodded, "I mentioned helping you find Li Suiyun last time. You never told me which station he's at."
"!" Ye Feixiao's eyes widened, astonished, "Lan, you're truly a good person! He's at Nancheng Station! I was planning to borrow a car to look for him, can I come with you when you go?"
Graciously accepting the praise, Ling Chunann shook his head, "It's too dangerous outside, better you stay at home."
"Ah? But didn't the military station troops recently? They've taken care of the parasites," Ye Feixiao pointed out.
"Have you forgotten what the true nature of those parasitic humans is?"
"Demons, devil vines?"
"Yes," Ling Chunann nodded, "In the end, their essence is still that of plants."
Ye Feixiao hissed in realization, "So you're saying they..."
When Shu Siyan called them for dinner, Ye Feixiao was still somewhat preoccupied, but upon seeing Shu Siyan, his worries seemed to vanish, reverting to the state of shock he was in when he first arrived. As Ling Chunann led him to the washbasin to wash hands, Ye Feixiao quietly asked, "Who is that person outside?"
"My fate," Ling Chunann smiled, "I remember you used to admire him quite a bit."
"No way, the god Without Shadow??" Ye Feixiao glanced towards the dining room and then back at Ling Chunann, incredulous, "You... you guys got together so quickly?"
"Um, we've been together for quite a while now."
"That... um," Ye Feixiao seemed hesitant.
"What is it?"
"Do you... like him?" Ye Feixiao inquired.
"Of course, otherwise why would I be with him," Ling Chunann affirmed, "Let's go out."
"Oh."
Because you like his taste, 098 silently added, noting that up to now, the man had also been serving as Ling Chunann's source of sustenance.
However, such unpleasantries 098 had learned to keep to itself, seeing that neither the speaker nor the listener would appreciate them, opting not to dampen the mood.
Upon reaching the dining room, Ye Feixiao was startled to find the previously cold and aloof man nodding at him. Although the expression was far from warm, it was significantly more amiable than before, showing a welcoming change.
