"What? You're saying I've been fired?" Bai Yuanyu exclaimed in disbelief.
"Yes, Miss Bai, President Lu has personally instructed that since you are still an intern assistant and have been working for less than half a month, you don't need to do a job handover. You won't need to come to work tomorrow."
Bai Yuanyu's face turned pale, "But I..."
"As your direct superior, President Lu has the authority to dismiss you directly, and that's for certain."
After those words, the phone was hung up, leaving Bai Yuanyu listening to the dial tone, her mind blank.
What happened? Why was she fired? Isn't this her own family's company? How could she be fired from a minor assistant position?
The more Bai Yuanyu thought about it, the more incredulous she became.
"Yuanyu, why are you standing outside? Dinner is ready, come inside," Mrs. Lu's voice called from inside, prompting Bai Yuanyu to compose her expression before silently entering the living room.
"What's wrong? Is work not going well? Why do you look so down?" Mrs. Lu immediately noticed Bai Yuanyu's depressed expression and asked with concern.
"It's nothing," Bai Yuanyu hurriedly picked up her chopsticks, forcing a smile, "Let's eat."
Of course, Mrs. Lu didn't buy it, "You're definitely hiding something from me. Tell me, who bullied you? Speak up, and I'll stand up for you. You always keep everything to yourself. You are now a daughter of the Lu family; who dares to bully you?"
Bai Yuanyu bit her lip, avoiding her mother's gaze. Under persistent questioning, she stuttered, "I... I've been fired."
"What?!" Mrs. Lu was so shocked she knocked her utensils against the table edge, "Who in the Lu corporation dares to fire the Lu family's young miss?"
Taken aback by her mother's reaction, Bai Yuanyu quickly went behind her to pat her back, "Mom, don't be angry. Actually, it was my fault I was fired, it's not my brother's fault."
"Was it Lu Jiayan's doing?" Mrs. Lu seized on Bai Yuanyu's hint.
Having just finished dinner and declining an offer for a post-meal exercise, Ling Chunann was planning to rest early when his usually quiet personal phone suddenly rang.
"Host, it's Mrs. Lu, probably calling to plead for the female protagonist," 098 guessed.
"I think 'accusing me' would be more accurate," Ling Chunann raised an eyebrow, then silenced the phone.
"Aren't you going to answer it?" 098 asked.
"She'll just question why I fired the female protagonist and then demand I reinstate her, or else she won't acknowledge me as her son," Ling Chunann lounged back, enjoying the fragrance of the blooming osmanthus in the yard.
After a few more calls, Mrs. Lu finally quieted down. Surprisingly, she then sent a text message.
"Has she forgotten you can't see now?" 098 expressed astonishment.
"Who knows," Ling Chunann took the phone, "Read it."
"Xiaoyan, did you and your sister have a disagreement at work? She came back saying you fired her. Yuanyu is your sister; let's discuss this calmly. If you're unhappy with her punctuality, that's my fault for asking her to come home early. Let's talk at the company tomorrow." After 098 finished reading, it asked, "Host, are you going to reply?"
"What for? I can't see," Ling Chunann said.
...But you've taken a day off tomorrow.
The eye doctor that the Lu family's old butler had recommended to Ling Chunann had arrived in Country C earlier than expected. The butler had contacted Ling Chunann the day before, asking him to make time for a check-up tomorrow, which Ling Chunann had agreed to.
Thus, the Lu family mother and daughter were bound for disappointment.
The next morning, a car stopped at the mansion's gate. As Ling Chunann came out, the butler disembarked from the passenger side, greeting respectfully, "Young master," then saluting to Lu Lingfeng, "Third master."
Lu Lingfeng nodded, holding Ling Chunann's hand, "Baby, want me to take you there?"
"No need, Grandpa Butler is with me, I'll be fine," Ling Chunann declined.
The man wanted to insist, but Ling Chunann added, "Lu Yuan seems to need you."
After glancing at Lu Yuan, who hesitated to speak, Lu Lingfeng kissed Ling Chunann lightly on the lips, "Then, go and come back early, be safe, call me if anything."
"Alright."
"Master, Doctor Lan is having an exchange at the central hospital, so we've
arranged to meet there today," the old butler informed.
"Thank you, Grandpa Butler," Ling Chunann nodded.
"Why thank? Ah, young master, I've watched you grow up, your age is close to my grandson's. Your eyes were so bright before, how did they become like this?"
"Don't worry, I'm fine now. Not being able to see doesn't hinder my work; it's all the same," Ling Chunann comforted.
The old butler wiped away a tear, moved, "Young master has grown up."
The eye department at the central hospital is ranked among the top three in Country C. Ling Chunann had been hospitalized there before, and his eyes were also operated on by the hospital's top surgeon.
"Be careful with the steps, young master," the old butler carefully supported Ling Chunann's arm.
"I can walk on my own," Ling Chunann said somewhat helplessly to the overly attentive butler.
"How can that be? What if the young master gets hurt? How do I explain to the third master? How can I face the master and madam? Oh, what am I saying, don't take it to heart, young master."
"Eh? Ayan!"
Just entering the hospital's outpatient hall, Ling Chunann heard a familiar voice, "Tan Zhilang. What are you doing here?"
Tan Zhilang, happy to be recognized by Ling Chunann, shook the medicine bag in his hand before realizing Ling Chunann couldn't see, "Just a cold, supposed to get better by tomorrow, but my mom insisted I come get medicine. How about you? Here for a check-up?"
"Master Tan, our young master has an appointment with Doctor Lan," the butler interjected.
"You mean Doctor Lan who just arrived for an exchange yesterday? I heard a lot of people booked him. Whose name did you use for the appointment? I'll ask his assistant for you," Tan Zhilang offered.
"Lu Zifeng," the butler used his son's name.
"Alright, wait here, I'll be right back," Tan Zhilang said, heading towards a different area with his phone.
About ten seconds later, 098 spoke to Ling Chunann, "Host, the butler's son's appointment is now over ten places away. You might not see him until tomorrow. Do you want me to adjust the position for you?"
"No need," Ling Chunann shook his head, "Don't you think queue jumping is a very unethical thing?"
"...You're right, host."
Half a minute later, Tan Zhilang returned with a smile, "Let's go upstairs, your appointment is next."
"What a coincidence," Ling Chunann feigned surprise.
"Yeah, let's go," Tan Zhilang naturally took Ling Chunann's other arm.
Watching their host proceed without hesitation or question, despite claiming not to jump the queue, 098 felt deceived once again.
After getting off the elevator, Tan Zhilang led Ling Chunann to a sofa, "You guys wait here for a bit. I'll go check if he's in."
Ling Chunann nodded, "Okay."
"Please come in," a clear and gentle voice came from inside.
"Doctor Lan," Tan Zhilang greeted first, "Long time no see."
"Back in the country for just a few days and you're already pretending not to know me?" Doctor Lan adjusted his glasses on the bridge of his nose, "What about that old classmate you mentioned? What's his situation?"
"He lost his sight in a car accident. I was planning to make an appointment with you after you were less busy in a couple of days, but someone booked it for him first. You don't mind me cutting in line, do you?" Tan Zhilang asked with an embarrassed smile.
"This preemptive action of yours, you scion of the hospital director, what can I do to you?" Doctor Lan gave Tan Zhilang a look, "I've never seen you so enthusiastic before. Tell me the truth, are you secretly in love with him?"
"What are you talking about?" Tan Zhilang jumped up, "He's a guy!"
"A guy? And what's the problem with that? Haven't you been to a gay bar before?" Doctor Lan pushed his glasses up again.
"Lan Zhengxing! I was tricked into going there by you!" Tan Zhilang retorted.
"Alright, alright, my bad. Go ahead and call your old classmate in. Don't keep him waiting outside," Doctor Lan said, "Still saying you don't like him? Why is your face red then?"
Tan Zhilang reflexively slammed the door shut, then touched his own face, realizing it was indeed a bit warm. He shook his head vigorously, dismissing the absurd thought. How could he possibly like Ling Chunann? He was clearly into girls. Yet, the image of Ling Chunann from their last encounter at the restaurant flashed through his mind again. He smacked his head hard, wondering what he was thinking.
"Host, turns out the first and second male leads knew each other all along," 098 discovered as if it found new continents. The original plot didn't mention this at all, not even writing them into any confrontational scenes.
"The story naturally revolves around the female lead. Insignificant interactions between side characters are of course omitted," Ling Chunann commented, "098, your voice is getting shriller. Are you going through a voice change?"
"..."
"Ayan, let's go in," Tan Zhilang approached, "Where's Butler Lu?"
"He received a call about some urgent matter, so I let him go ahead," Ling Chunann explained.
"No problem, I'll take you back later," Tan Zhilang said.
"Okay," Ling Chunann nodded compliantly, letting Tan Zhilang support him as they moved forward.
Tan Zhilang glanced sideways, catching a glimpse of Ling Chunann's profile and his full, pink lips.
"Host, the first male lead's face is red," 098 noted.
