The cave was likely dug by the indigenous people to store firewood, and it still contained some dry branches. Ling Chunann threw Knicks onto the pile of branches and then left the cave, saying to 098, who was engaged in a fierce battle with the insectoids, "Stay here for the next few days."
"..."
When Knicks awoke, five days had passed. He found himself lying in the cave, with the insectoid attractant on his body still effective. Oddly, there were no insectoids around, and his life-threatening injuries had almost completely healed. Remembering the figure he saw before passing out, he shook his head. It couldn't possibly be that person; he must have been mistaken.
Thinking this, Knicks climbed up from the pile of branches and walked out of the cave, only to see a mecha fighting valiantly alone amidst a pile of insectoid corpses.
Nick's gaze was immediately captured by the mecha. He took a sharp breath, recognizing it, of course. Any reasonably informed person in the empire would recognize it; it was the War God's mecha.
But why was it here? It seemed to have been here for quite some time.
Seeing Knicks emerge and stare in astonishment, 098, who was painstakingly controlling the mecha to create a protective circle for the secondary male character, couldn't help but get irritated. If it weren't for this guy, he wouldn't have been left here to fight these repulsive insects. And now, the guy just stood there gawking instead of offering help.
Annoyed, 098 deliberately let a couple of insectoids through to see them fly towards Knicks, who then flailed about in a panic, eliciting a chuckle of schadenfreude from 098.
After killing the insects, Knicks finally snapped back to reality, chiding himself for being distracted on the battlefield. Thinking of his subordinates, he immediately panicked. He had fainted for a full five days; what had become of their last line of defense?
Unable to stand still any longer, Knicks started slashing at the insectoids with his light saber, easing some of 098's burden. However, he didn't say anything about needing the mysterious mecha's help to return to the defensive line. As long as the insectoid attractant on him was effective and he remained here, the defensive line would remain secure. For now, his task was to hold his ground here.
098 appreciated the secondary male character's sensibility and shared some of the burden with him. This finally gave him a moment to check on his host's situation.
Ling Chunann had already penetrated the insectoid nest. The insectoids on this planet weren't particularly high-level, at most A-class. With Ling Chunann's level, they weren't much of a threat. The only headache was their sheer number, which seemed endless. That's why it took Ling Chunann so much time to get here.
But, fortunately, it was within his expectations.
Inside the nest was a queen insect two people tall, with a belly the size of a soccer field. Small insects continuously crawled out from under her, and preliminary estimates suggested that the queen could birth hundreds of insectoids every second. Within a minute, they could grow to half a person's size and swarm out of the nest in dense masses.
Looking at the queen, still wriggling and birthing insects even with a pierced brain, Ling Chunann frowned in disgust before swinging his sword again, decapitating the nauseatingly large head of the queen.
A few minutes later, the queen finally stopped twitching.
Ling Chunann observed for a while longer, then walked out of the insectoid nest, pulling out a crystal-clear small bead from his space ring.
This little thing had been placed inside the ring along with it when Nor had given the ring to Ling Chunann. Initially, Ling Chunann didn't know how to use it until Nor explained its purpose during an accidental discovery.
The small bead rolled precisely into the cave, and at the same time, Ling Chunann ran out of the valley at his fastest speed.
"Boom!"
Following the explosion, the valley was instantly engulfed in a sea of flames, with the insectoids on its outskirts charging into the fire like moths to a flame.
Ling Chunann took one last look at the burning valley, then at the azure sky, before heading back the way he came.
Two days had passed since Knicks woke up. The relentless fighting had left him, who hadn't fully recovered, exhausted. If it weren't for this mysterious mecha pilot, he probably would have given up long ago.
However, Knicks couldn't tell if it was his imagination, but it seemed like the number of insectoids was dwindling.
Just as Knicks was puzzled by this, he suddenly felt a pain in his back, his vision darkened, and he lost consciousness again.
098 spotted a figure not far away. "Host, you're back!" it exclaimed, about to rush towards Ling Chunann.
Ling Chunann gave it a look, and 098 realized someone was still lying on the ground. It hurriedly cleared the nearby insectoids. After Ling Chunann took over, 098 said pitifully, "Host, I'll never leave you again." Piloting the disobedient mecha was too exhausting. It had even bought two bottles of energy drink to replenish its strength, a total loss.
Ignoring 098's sentiments, Ling Chunann praised, "098, you've worked hard. You did well."
098, revitalized, replied bashfully, "Host, don't mention it. It's my duty."
With the queen insect slain, the insectoids were mostly in disarray, flocking towards the nest, significantly reducing their aggression.
Ling Chunann, controlling the mecha, picked up Knicks and headed towards a cave in the back. As he walked, he mused, "Using this mecha to kill these insects is such an overkill."
Back in the cave, Ling Chunann put away the mecha and started a fire with some twigs. Before the fire could flare up, 098 announced, "Secondary male character's affection +25%, current affection at 60%."
Excited by the progress, 098 felt its efforts over the past few days were not in vain. "Host, he's awake now, pretending to be asleep."
Ling Chunann wouldn't expose the pretender. He took a long stick, skewered a large insect leg, and roasted it over the fire.
"Are you hungry, host?" 098 asked, seeing Ling Chunann roasting an insect seriously.
Ling Chunann replied, "A bit."
"Don't you have food in your space ring?" Over many worlds, with men's efforts, Ling Chunann could now eat most normal foods, though he treated them more like snacks. This was enough to comfort 098. Also, as Ling Chunann's physique was special across these worlds, his need for food wasn't as significant, allowing him to venture out confidently.
Indeed, Ling Chunann's space ring was full of food, all personally prepared by men, in case he got hungry when they weren't around. Though he never said it, Ling Chunann could tell, especially from the familiar taste of many meat products.
Ignoring 098's question, Ling Chunann continued roasting.
As the aroma of the insect leg grew stronger, Knicks, who hadn't eaten in nearly ten days, couldn't resist opening his eyes as his stomach growled.
"You're awake," Ling Chunann said, offering the roasted insect leg. "It's just done. Want some?"
Looking at the crispy, fragrant insect leg, Knicks swallowed hard, hesitated, then retracted his hand, asking, "How are you here? Isn't the academy still in session?"
Ling Chunann didn't answer but pushed the insect leg closer. "Here, eat and talk."
Overcoming his hunger, Knicks took a bite, and his eyes lit up. The insect's leg, though unsightly raw, turned crispy on the outside and tender on the inside after roasting, exuding a natural meatiness despite lacking any seasoning. This was a revelation, especially for someone like Knicks who had never eaten anything but robot-prepared food and nutrient supplements.
"Secondary male character's affection +30%, current affection at 90%."
098 was incredulous. Could a single insect leg outweigh the gratitude of saving a life?
"098, don't you know there's a creature called a foodie in this world?" Ling Chunann said nonchalantly.
Speechless, 098 watched as Knicks devoured the insect leg, then shyly thanked Ling Chunann, who dismissed it, "No worries. Are you full? This piece might take a while longer to cook. Just wait."
"Okay." The alpha, now stripped of his mild facade and focused only on the food, was somewhat endearing.
As Knicks ate the second insect leg, Ling Chunann asked, "Senior Knicks, how did you end up on this planet?"
The 90%
affection allowed Knicks to trust Ling Chunann. He explained, "I joined the imperial army last year and am now the deputy leader of the Third Army, holding the rank of Major. Two months ago, hearing about anomalies at the frontier, I led ten thousand subordinates to the 158-star system for investigation. Twenty days ago, we arrived at Linhai Star, only to fall into an insectoid trap. Our ships were destroyed, and the mechas lost power. We were left with no choice but to make a stand. If it weren't for your arrival, I might have died here."
Knicks reported the massive insectoid invasion to the Imperial Star, expecting reinforcements within days. He then reiterated his question, "But why are you on this planet? It's a frontier system, rarely visited."
Hearing this, Ling Chunann paused in gathering twigs, his previously normal expression turning sour.
Knicks, concerned, asked, "What's wrong? Did I ask something I shouldn't have?"
Knowing Ling Chunann was about to put on an act, 098 watched as he solemnly said, "No, I just don't know how to answer." He sighed, then added, "If there's anything I can help with, I will."
"Thank you, Senior Knicks," Ling Chunann said, then confessed, "Actually, I ran away from a wedding."
