When Ling Chunann encountered Ye Chufeng again, he was attempting to scale the wall into his yard, only to be pulled down by security guards summoned by the household robot. As Ling Chunann appeared, the guards increased their grip, causing Ye Chufeng to crash to the ground with a thud. "My apologies, Mr. Mu, for our oversight," said a security guard, an earnest-looking middle-aged man whose face turned red with anxiety. "We don't know how he managed to climb the wall, but I'll call the enforcement team right away."
Ye Chufeng looked disheveled, his clothes wrinkled as if unworn for days, his complexion pale, and his eyes bloodshot, resembling a criminal, which explained the guard's urgency. Hauled up by two guards, it seemed he had hurt his hand in the fall, his left hand dangling as he glared fiercely. "Mu Linke, did you do this?"
"I have no idea what you're talking about," Ling Chunann replied, expressionless.
"If not you, who else would have driven me out!" Ye Chufeng exclaimed. "And the incident at the bar, you recognized me, didn't you? You're retaliating against me!"
After leaving the Mu residence, Ye Chufeng realized that Mu Linke might not be a time-traveler, but he must hold a grudge, given that Ye almost caused his death. Now, everything Mu Linke did seemed like revenge. Despite this, Ye Chufeng held onto a sliver of hope that perhaps his opponent didn't intend to kill him.
Ling Chunann, observing the hope in Ye Chufeng's eyes, chuckled to himself. "098, I think he's quite clever."
"Yes, host." The fact that Ye Chufeng guessed Ling Chunann wasn't originally from this world showed his rich imagination, a sign of intelligence.
"But his actions are foolish. Understandable, though, as a cornered dog will jump over a wall," Ling Chunann mused, losing interest in Ye Chufeng. He then told the inquiring security guards, "I don't know this person. He might just be a fan. Please escort him out."
"Understood, Mr. Mu. We assure you this won't happen again," the guard said solemnly.
Ye Chufeng's fall from grace was swift, his earnings from novels gone after investing in a failed movie, leaving him nowhere to turn. From heaven to hell in an instant, he found himself at Ling Chunann's residence, though he couldn't fathom why he came. By then, he was truly desperate.
Even as he was escorted out, Ye Chufeng continued hurling insults learned from his previous life as an underdog, until the guards gagged him to spare their ears.
Ling Chunann watched the former protagonist, now discarded like trash, and inquired about the remaining screening time for Ye Chufeng's movie.
"The world typically allows a movie two months, but due to poor sales, the screening period for 'The Shooting Hero' will be cut short by a week," came the reply.
No wonder Ye Chufeng was breaking down, sensing his impending doom should he fail his mission and be forced out by the system. Ling Chunann felt no sympathy, whether for himself or the original protagonist.
Turning around, Ling Chunann noticed Fu Xianzhi at the door, who immediately brightened up, "Darling, it's time to eat."
"Is he upset?" asked 098.
Ling Chunann smiled, "Someone's in for trouble."
After being driven out, Ye Chufeng lay on the ground for over half an hour before slowly getting up. "Can I just quit this mission?"
"The system, once bound, requires task completion. Deliberate neglect will result in forced measures," came the cold reply.
Remembering the pain from last time, Ye Chufeng shivered and staggered away, thinking of someone who might help him. The elder Mu had always liked Ye Chufeng, even excusing his past mistake as youthful folly, and had insisted on Ye Chufeng's return to the Mu family after learning he was one of them.
However, Ye Chufeng was unaware that, before his return, the plagiarism of 'The Shooting Hero' and 'Dragon Eight' had spread across the net. The elder Mu, informed by younger relatives fond of novels, passed out in anger upon hearing the news. Ye Chufeng didn't even make it through the door before the film association announced a ban on 'The Shooting Hero' due to conclusive evidence of plagiarism, demanding compensation from Ye Chufeng.
"Mission failed. The system will forcibly extract you," intoned the system emotionlessly.
Ye Chufeng felt a surge of pain as his body's energy rapidly drained, his mind fogging over. He couldn't understand how things had come to this. Other protagonists thrived with system assistance, but
he faced a tragic end at his own system's hands. It seemed so unfair.
But no matter his thoughts, the system's energy absorption continued unabated. Eventually, Ye Chufeng collapsed outside the Mu family mansion, onto the shaded path. If he died there, he mused, the first to find him would likely be the Mu family's cleaning robot. "Just trash," he thought, yet found it oddly amusing.
Maybe he was never meant to be the protagonist. But that was a question he might never get the chance to answer.
"Counterattack value +3%, current value at 98%. Please continue your efforts, host."
"Host, I'm not sure who did it, but I think Fu Xianzhi spread the cultural patent information you had previously released on a small scale across the entire Star Web. He also deliberately leaked the news to Elder Mu. Meanwhile, the Film Association has confirmed that the protagonist's two books were entirely plagiarized, leading to the movie being pulled from theaters ahead of schedule. The protagonist is now at a dead end, and as expected, his writing system turned against him," said 098. "But don't worry, I've taken care of that system. The protagonist is not in any life-threatening danger now."
"No life-threatening danger?" Ling Chunann repeated.
"Sorry, host. The system acted too quickly for me to intervene in time. The protagonist has absorbed too much energy, which might have slightly affected his brain," 098 explained, implying the protagonist might become somewhat foolish.
"Is that so? Well done," Ling Chunann praised.
098 fell silent, not feeling guilty. After all, the protagonist had insulted the host quite harshly.
Three years later, as Ling Chunann finished another book, the system notification sounded, "Counterattack value +2%, current counterattack value is 100%. Congratulations, host, on completing the mission. Would you like to return to the system space immediately?"
"No."
By then, Ling Chunann had undoubtedly become the top deity in the literary world. The former protagonist had been sent to a mental health facility by Mu Linjia, where he spent his days recounting his glorious tales of time-travel to everyone he met, believing himself to be a world-saving hero in his own mind.
Ling Chunann refused the Mu family head's offer of reconciliation and had no plans to return to the Mu family. Mu Linjia died on the operating table, exchanging her life for a dark, ugly monster child with sharp teeth, who was said to be kept in the basement of the Mu family home, likely never to see the light of day.
After the movie was pulled, Mu Linjia collected her deserved dividends but didn't use them for herself. Instead, she invested the credits in her company under Ling Chunann's name. Over three years, the profits grew nearly tenfold, increasing Ling Chunann's assets to nearly twelve zeros, and they were still growing steadily.
After reviewing his assets, Ling Chunann decisively quit writing and invested in a laboratory. Mu Linke, having studied pharmacology seriously, already had relevant knowledge. With Fu Xianzhi's encyclopedic assistance, Ling Chunann researched all clinical manifestations of MX3 genetic disease and current medical treatments over the past century. After the lab was established, it took nearly five years to find a cure. Ling Chunann was the first test subject for the completed drug, and a month later, he was declared fully recovered.
Ling Chunann also published a series of papers outlining the commonalities of all genetic diseases, providing crucial data for future genetic pathology research, causing a worldwide sensation.
But then, Ling Chunann disappeared.
"He's toxic!" Ling Chunann exclaimed upon returning to the system space, having stayed in a world until its planetary life ended for the first time.
The reason was a question he asked Fu Xianzhi during a moment of intimacy, "What is your world like?"
"Want to see it?"
"Yes."
Somehow, Fu Xianzhi transported Ling Chunann into his virtual world, where Ling Chunann became a godlike being, able to control everything and see through all things.
This experience was incredible for a once ordinary person, but Ling Chunann was no ordinary individual. He immediately sensed that this feeling came from being mentally linked with Fu Xianzhi.
After initial discomfort, Ling Chunann discovered new pleasures. The virtual space could simulate any scene he desired, and intimacy with Fu Xianzhi, under a shared mindset, offered a dual sensation, which thrilled him.
Ling Chunann thought he had experienced all the love he could in that virtual space, but upon returning to the system space, his first reaction was to look around for Fu Xianzhi, hence his exclamation.
"Welcome back to the system space," said 098, finally able to speak after being silenced for who knows how long.
"Congratulations, host, on completing the mission. You've earned 20,000 energy points, with the bonus mission doubling that and an additional 10,000 points for a hidden task, bringing your total to 107,000. The system store is now open. Would you like to purchase anything?" Before Ling Chunann could respond, 098 added, "Reminder, your healing ability has reached the maximum level six and cannot be upgraded further. You can spend 50,000 energy points to convert your healing ability into the Power of Light."
"What's that? Sounds pretty cheesy."
"As the name suggests, it's akin to Western magic's light magic, possessing not only healing powers but also purification and attack capabilities,
with no level cap."
"Is there a Power of Darkness?"
"Yes, host. However, if you purchase it alone, it costs 100,000 energy points, and it will consume any healing abilities it conflicts with."
"I see." Ling Chunann pondered for a moment. When 098 thought he might give up, Ling Chunann suddenly said, "Then let's go with the darkness."
Five minutes later, 098 asked for the fifth time, "Host, are you sure?"
"098, when did you start being so indecisive? Hurry up; I'm ready to start the next mission."
"But this ability took so much effort to upgrade. It's such a pity to lose it."
"Hurry."
"Yes, host. Confirming the purchase of the Power of Darkness for 100,000 energy points." After saying this, 098 fell into an odd silence until Ling Chunann prompted it to respond, "As this is the host's first purchase over 100,000 energy points, you're granted a special offer: an additional Fusion Device."
"A Fusion Device?"
"It allows the fusion of two completely opposing abilities to achieve perfect balance within the host," explained 098.
"Nice." Ling Chunann nodded.
What 098 didn't mention was that the Fusion Device, given as a gift, was more expensive than five Powers of Darkness combined.
