Before his unexpected journey through time, Ye Chufeng was an ordinary-looking writer who barely made ends meet by penning subpar web novels. Aside from writing, he had no other skills to speak of. One day, while pondering how to request a rent extension from his landlord, he was struck by lightning and found himself in another world.
"System binding successful. Welcome, host. I am the Literary God Cultivation System, codenamed Literary System 313. You may call me 313," were the first words Ye Chufeng heard upon awakening.
To his surprise, he discovered he had transformed into a handsome man and a student at a prestigious university. Despite his orphanage background, his spirits remained high.
His system was filled with countless classics, in stark contrast to the culturally barren world he now inhabited. Ye Chufeng felt it would be a disservice to the people if he didn't achieve godlike status in this context.
Ye Chufeng initially overlooked the system's requirement to complete certain tasks before progressing. As expected, his first novel caused a sensation in this new world, where martial arts fiction, especially under the influence of Master Jin Yong's classics, was unheard of. He sensed he was on the verge of becoming a revolutionary figure in literary history, viewing any obstacles, including Mu Linke, as insignificant.
However, Ye Chufeng was taken aback to discover someone had written a novel about immortal cultivation. He ignored the recommendation at first, underestimating the cultural depth of this new world. But curiosity got the better of him on the third recommendation, prompting him to open the novel titled "Ascending to Immortality." The premise—a girl's extraordinary adventure leading to her cultivation journey—seemed unremarkable to him. Yet, it represented a novel genre in this world, sparking a thought that perhaps another traveler from his world had arrived.
The novel had already amassed over 200,000 words, a figure Ye Chufeng had previously ignored since it hadn't been commercialized yet. With a deep sense of crisis, he began reading the first chapter, which introduced a cultivation system unlike any he was familiar with from his original world. This reassured him that the author might not be from his world.
As he delved deeper into the story, Ye Chufeng became so engrossed that he forgot his initial purpose until there were no more pages left, leaving him frustrated for having been captivated by a rival's work and even missing his lunch.
Determined to study the author's writing style and better understand his adversary, Ye Chufeng revisited the earlier chapters. He wasn't arrogant and was willing to learn from a worthy opponent. However, the more he read, the more displeased he became—not because of the author's poor writing, but because it highlighted his own shortcomings.
Taking a deep breath, Ye Chufeng exited the virtual space and flipped his desk in frustration.
"Host, the male protagonist just read your work and then flipped his desk," reported 098 in a timely manner, amused by the situation, especially since the desk had a love meal prepared by the female lead, whom the male protagonist was now trying to appease.
Ling Chunann, with different concerns, asked, "When did you start assigning numbers to the female lead?"
"Uh," 098 hesitated, "It was... during your physical activities."
Feeling a bit sheepish, 098 glanced at Ling Chunann, hoping his host wasn't displeased.
At that moment, Ling Chunann spoke up, "Well done, but next time, please let me know after you've assigned the numbers. It's rather awkward not knowing the names when you mention them."
"Of course, host," 098 replied, relieved. "The male lead has three ladies in his harem, so I numbered them according to their appearance. Number one is the daughter adopted by the Mu family, essentially your sister in name. Number two is the heiress of Fengyun Culture, who has just made her entrance and isn't familiar with the male lead yet. Number three is a robot companion, a gift from the second lady to the male lead, who hasn't appeared yet. I didn't include any other casual romantic interests or admirers in the list."
Ling Chunann nodded, signaling his understanding. "The Mu family should be close to discovering the male lead's identity by now."
"Yes, according to the plot, the patriarch of the Mu family will find out tomorrow that Ye Chufeng is his long-lost illegitimate son who has been outside for over twenty years," 098 said as it flipped through its records. "Host, would you like me to hide this information?"
"No need," Ling Chunann declined 098's suggestion.
"What are you thinking about?" Fu Xianzhi noticed Ling Chunann hadn't touched his food and expressed his concern. "Is it not to your taste?"
"I'm just not hungry," Ling Chunann said. "Let's go out tonight."
"Host, your health hasn't fully recovered yet. It's not good to go to crowded places," 098 advised.
However, Fu Xianzhi clearly sided with Ling Chunann. "Where would you like to go?"
"Blue Light," Ling Chunann answered.
Fu Xianzhi paused, surprised by the answer, but didn't refuse. "Alright, when shall we leave?"
After setting a time to leave, Ling Chunann planned to spend the next few hours finishing up his nearly overdue novel.
Three hours later, Ling Chunann completed the updates for the next three days. He habitually opened his communicator and found it filled with messages. He hadn't checked it in two weeks; when had he become so popular?
Mulling over this, Ling Chunann opened the message box of the person with the most notifications, Mu Linke's editor, Li Yi. Li had signed a contract with Mu Linke when he first started writing novels. Even after discovering Ye Chufeng, a writer with great potential, Li remained loyal to Mu Linke, preventing him from being overshadowed.
Li Yi had left many messages for Ling Chunann in the past few days, all about the new novel rankings. The latest message had been sent just a few minutes ago.
Mu Zi Yi: "Are you there? The new novel has reached over 200,000 words, and we can prepare to publish it. When are you free? Have you prepared the manuscripts? Please reply when you see this message."
After reading Mu Zi Yi's message, Ling Chunann briefly replied and expressed his thanks, then opened another message from someone named Mu Linjun in his contacts, who was the cousin that had come to pick him up from the hospital. The message was sent two weeks ago.
Mu Linjun: "Mu Linke, I'm warning you, don't let me see you at the old house for at least a month."
The message was as straightforward and unkind as she had been when she came to pick him up.
"Host, this person is being unreasonable. The Mu family is also your family. Even though you've moved out, why shouldn't you be allowed to return?" 098 couldn't understand the logic of these people.
Ling Chunann wasn't upset. "Check what she's been up to since I was discharged."
"Right away, host." Without questioning Ling Chunann's request, 098 diligently searched for Mu Linjun's recent activities.
"Host, after she parted ways with you, she found out that the male lead had been invited over by the Mu family's elder and Mu Linyu. The male lead greeted her, but she seemed unwelcoming, leading to a conflict between them, after which she moved out to live with her best friend," 098 relayed. "The message she sent you was after she moved out."
It was unexpected for her to be so unfriendly to the host, yet still thoughtfully warn him.
Ling Chunann didn't comment and glanced at the time, realizing it was about time to leave.
"Do you want to go to the Blue Light bar to see the male lead?" 098 inquired.
"Smart," Ling Chunann said as Fu Xianzhi fastened his buttons. "But the main reason is to go on a date. We've been together for so long and haven't had one yet."
098, familiar with Ling Chunann's habits, knew that he preferred staying home, showing affection, and
engaging in physical activities unless there was a reason to go out. So, if Ling Chunann wanted to leave today, it could only mean he was looking to cause trouble for the male lead.
Yet, nothing significant was supposed to happen in the original story today.
Letting its curiosity run wild, 098 watched as Ling Chunann and Fu Xianzhi drove towards the city center. It was dusk, and the streets of this network-rich world were surprisingly empty, with more people appearing as they neared the downtown area.
Fu Xianzhi parked the hovercar on the rooftop of the largest mall in the city center. "Blue Light is on the basement level, but it's still early. We can look around first. You didn't eat much for dinner; let's see if there's something you'd like to eat."
"Okay."
098 thought, "What makes him think the host ate too little? He had a big chunk of meat before we left."
Seeing Ling Chunann agree so nonchalantly, 098 decided it was best not to interfere, lest it be the one to suffer in the end.
