He Qingtang was ruthlessly kicked out of the reception room by the president, leaving her to regain her composure slowly, her lips curling in disdain.
Inside, Nie Jia was there, negotiating...
The afternoon meeting revolved around Nie Jia.
After Shen Su showcased the victory at the Reformation Camp to the higher-ups, the leaders who had initially considered recruiting Nie Jia had a sudden change of heart. Nie Jia, originally considered a lunatic, proved too formidable to control, even with the combined efforts of Shen Su and Kong Fei. Now, having advanced further, he posed a significant threat, far surpassing the danger posed by the Oasis.
"Ning Lang has shown no signs of disturbance since taking office. I believe the priority should be to eliminate Nie Jia as soon as possible, regardless of the cost," Shen Su gritted his teeth, flames of hatred flickering in his eyes.
"At what cost, Colonel? Who do you see as that cost?" He Qingtang retorted displeased.
"Nie Jia and Ning Lang are cut from the same cloth. If Ning Lang learns of Nie Jia's advancement, he'll surely try everything to reconcile. If they join forces, have you considered the consequences, Major?" Shen Su snapped back.
"If you mean killing Nie Jia at any cost, then it would almost require the entire nation's resources. Even if Nie Jia were to die, it would be meaningless. The existence of our nation is for peace, not to satisfy your desire for revenge on Kong Fei," Shi Chen interjected, bluntly hitting Shen Su where it hurt the most.
Shen Su's pupils dilated, his discontent with the higher-ups already brewing. What was the significance of his friend's sacrifice?
"Was Lieutenant Kong's sacrifice also meaningless?" Shen Su countered sharply, facing off against Shi Chen. "Major, Lieutenant Kong, as a fifth-tier ability user, dedicated himself to the nation, while also bearing the risk of being assassinated by the Shark Faction out of resentment. He died for the country, brutally murdered. Yet, you still consider forming an alliance with the perpetrator. Are you not afraid of chilling the hearts of our Dolphin Faction ability users?"
Silence fell over the conference room.
Shi Chen casually lifted the brim of his cap with his fingertips, lazily glancing at Shen Su.
"Ordering two senior military officers to lead troops to relentlessly hunt down the leader of the Shark Faction at any cost, as decided without authorization, has resulted in the dismissal and investigation of the Colonel who issued that command. Kong Fei and the Colonel, along with the soldiers who perished that night, were the cost," Shi Chen stated indifferently. "Both you and Kong Fei are valuable assets and senior military officers of our nation. Do you lack the intelligence to discern your own positions?"
Shen Su felt a mixture of irritation and inability to retort. At the time, Nie Jia's whereabouts had been accurately pinpointed—a rare opportunity. The Colonel had decided to send him and Kong Fei on the mission without reporting it upwards. At that time, they were both full of confidence... Who knew the outcome would be so devastating?
This matter would hold Shen Su accountable, no doubt.
"The Dolphin and Shark Factions are terms used by those who seek to divide our race. Major Shen, do you consider yourself a Dolphin Faction ability user?" someone spoke ominously.
Shen Su fell silent for a moment. "I misspoke."
He Qingtang's phone beeped in her pocket. She glanced down and then lowered her voice to inform Shi Chen, "My sister says Mr. Nie left about ten minutes ago. He should be here soon."
Shi Chen nodded casually.
While others continued to argue, mostly mid-level officers from the United Front Department, their opinions clashed and tempers flared, with no one yielding.
He Qingtang banged the table. "There's no need to mention Nie Jia anymore. He has met with President He and gained his trust. From now on, he's our ally."
The noisy conference room suddenly fell silent.
Shi Chen tapped his fingertips lightly on the table, glancing at He Qingtang, correcting her, "Nie Jia has withdrawn from the Hunter organization. He will receive Huaxia citizenship, not as an ally but as a comrade."
"That's impossible!" Shen Su's face showed anger as he slammed the table and stood up abruptly.
Nie Jia, the man who had been considered a major threat by both Huaxia and the United States, was standing outside. He had a faint smile on his face as he breezed in, saying, "Good afternoon, everyone."
In an instant, except for Shi Chen and He Qingtang, everyone in the conference room stood up abruptly, stepping back in shock.
During the meeting, Shi Chen gave Nie Jia a formal introduction and arranged for his people to be placed in Nine Departments. After the meeting, He Qingtang was tasked with making further arrangements. Once everyone calmed down, Nie Jia's inclusion only brought endless surprise. After all, no matter how they discussed hunting him down earlier, it was all based on the premise that he would threaten national security.
As a sixth-tier metal ability user and a fifth-tier medical ability user, this was a huge surprise and hope for Huaxia, which had wolves in front and tigers behind. In this era, if Huaxia wanted to maintain its anti-war stance, it could only expand its own strength. Only with sufficient strength could it bear the banner of anti-war, and Nie Jia's arrival was just in time.
However, those present were all senior military officers from the United Front Department and were not blinded by momentary excitement. Soon, there were suspicions raised about Nie Jia's actions.
Nie Jia readily provided the location of the Hunter's base and detailed defenses and the distribution of ability users to prove his sincerity.
"I'll verify it." Shen Su stood up, still looking at Nie Jia with deep-seated aversion and hatred. "Nie Jia, by sacrificing the existence of the entire Hunter organization, you've gained our trust. I must say, I'm quite impressed."
He mocked Nie Jia as a despicable person, but Nie Jia didn't seem to care.
Shen Su immediately planned to lead a team to the Hunter's base. As he passed by, he gritted his teeth and said fiercely, "Even if you've gained the President's trust, I won't acknowledge your identity."
"I'm not here to seek your acknowledgment. Don't take yourself too seriously. Just do what you need to do." Nie Jia smiled politely and returned the comment.
After a brief fiery exchange, Shen Su stormed off, followed by He Qingtang, who was dismissed by Shi Chen to arrange for others.
Nie Jia addressed the crowd, "I know my previous actions may not have earned your trust, and that's fine. I'm not asking for it. I just want to make it clear that I only act on behalf of Shi Chen, so you don't have to worry about any ulterior motives from me. Citizenship, power, status—these things don't interest me."
Shi Chen lazily propped his chin on the table, beckoning Nie Jia to sit beside him.
The others exchanged glances. In truth, they weren't overly concerned. Firstly, given Nie Jia's strength and character,
if he wanted to do something to Huaxia, he would have started a direct war long ago. Did he really need to infiltrate? Moreover, Huaxia had Captain Song as its trump card. Both the US and Oasis military and political systems had their share of red spies, but only Huaxia didn't, precisely because they had Captain Song Nuanyang.
If Nie Jia had any ulterior motives, they wouldn't stay hidden for long.
After formally announcing Nie Jia's inclusion, Shi Chen dismissed everyone to report back and then adjourned the meeting.
In the evening, Nie Jia went to Shi Chen's United Front Nine Department to help He Qingtang arrange matters for Meng Jia and others. These individuals were former members of the Hunter organization, and conflicts with the indigenous population were inevitable. It might even lead to riots, so Shi Chen directly ordered He Qingtang to take them into the military area.
"Boss, thank you," Meng Jia knocked on He Qingtang's office door and approached Nie Jia, whispering his thanks.
Busy organizing these people's abilities, Nie Jia merely smirked at the words, "This is my promise to you. No need for thanks."
"Do you want some coffee?" He Qingtang stood up, tore open a packet of instant black coffee, and handed it to Meng Jia.
Meng Jia glanced at He Qingtang's Colonel rank insignia and suddenly paused in her breath. Not long ago, they were enemies, yet now, a senior military officer who had led troops to attack them could accept their arrival without any grudge and even kindly offer her coffee.
"Thank you," Meng Jia took the coffee, unable to control the warmth in her eyes.
From the bottom of her heart, she prayed for peace to come soon.
Nie Jia remarked casually, "We're no longer members of the organization. From now on, just call me by my name. When you go back, tell everyone not to feel too restricted in the new environment. I'll inform Shi Chen that you won't be sent on missions for the time being. Just rest well. Of course, if anyone causes trouble because of your identities, don't hesitate to fight back. I'll take responsibility for any consequences."
"Alright!" Meng Jia smiled relievedly.
He Qingtang, as their direct superior in the military, held her coffee, feeling indignant. "What are you saying? We're all good boys and girls in Nine Department."
As she spoke, her phone rang. He Qingtang turned to answer it, then informed Nie Jia, "The Chief wants you to come home for dinner."
Nie Jia immediately tossed the documents in his hand aside and stood up. "Then, I'll leave."
He Qingtang's eyes were strange as she leaned over to quietly ask Meng Jia, "When did our Chief and your Boss hook up?"
Meng Jia shook her head in confusion, "I'm not sure. When our Boss said he wanted to leave, we were all surprised. Then he went straight to General Shi, and we were even more surprised. It seemed like they had already discussed it."
But they couldn't have discussed it, otherwise, the incident at Asakawa Airport wouldn't have happened, and Kong Fei wouldn't have died.
He Qingtang's eyes grew even stranger. If it weren't for the Chief's explicit order not to bother Nie Jia, she would have gone to pester him for a clear answer.
"Let's go to the cafeteria for dinner too," He Qingtang suggested.
As Nie Jia stepped out of the office, he immediately saw Shen Su approaching with an angry expression, accompanied by a polite black-haired youth.
The main character was Lieutenant Song, and Nie Jia raised an eyebrow, feeling slightly displeased. There was nothing wrong with Lieutenant Song; he was cheerful and kind, always researching armor and weapons for ordinary people. Nie Jia just disliked his ability.
Telepathy. As long as Lieutenant Song wished, he could discreetly understand everyone's thoughts in his line of sight, just with a glance. Sensory-type ability users didn't even need to expend much mental or physical energy.
Nie Jia stood still, "Is there something wrong?"
