After Shi Yiyuan left, Lin Xian carried Lulu into the study, placing her in her seat and silently checking her homework. The exercise book was filled with French words, and the handwriting was childish. The last stroke, with an unknown force, tore the paper. Clearly, Lin Xian had come out right after hearing the sound of Lin Xian being beaten and dropped the pen.
"Does it hurt, Daddy?" Lulu stood on the chair and touched Lin Xian's face.
"It's okay. Mom often beats Dad, too, but Dad doesn't feel hurt." Lin Xian patted the child's head.
"That's different. Mom won't hurt Dad." The child's words were full of resentment. "She wants to kill Dad, and I want to kill her."
"Baby, killing is a crime. Crime has consequences, and it might lead to paying with one's life." Lin Xian spoke calmly, earnestly to Lulu. "You're still young and may not understand now, but as you grow up, you'll realize that if someone commits a crime and doesn't face consequences, they might commit the same mistake again."
Lulu tilted her head and asked, "What does that mean?"
"Do you like your great-grandfather?" Lin Xian suddenly asked.
"No, he used to treat you and Lulu badly. Even if he's nice to us now, Lulu doesn't care. I only like Mom and Dad." Lulu shook her head, snuggling into Lin Xian's arms. The hint of resentment in the child's words disappeared when she smiled, revealing the innocence of a little girl.
Lin Xian clenched his teeth, touched Lulu's head, and said, "That's good."
In early winter, Nie Jia accompanied Han Manny to the film festival. The film "Doomsday" had multiple nominations, and as the CEO and scriptwriter, Nie Jia had to be present. However, in this setting, many fans anticipated seeing Nie Jia and Shi Chen together. Still, those watching the live broadcast were surprised to see Director Han holding Nie Jia's arm as they walked the red carpet.
"President Nie, it's a pity you didn't debut." Han Manny quietly said to Nie Jia after taking a photo.
The film festival was grand, with stars shining brightly. During the red carpet event, where fans could have close contact with idols, the audience expected to see many celebrities. However, the clamor for Nie Jia, a behind-the-scenes figure, drowned out other voices, making it seem as if a top idol had arrived.
On the night of the ceremony, "Doomsday" swept multiple awards, including Best Picture, Director, Original Script, Visual Effects, and Composition. Nie Jia did not go up to receive the awards; the Best Picture award was given to the production company, and the producer accepted it on behalf of the team. Nie Jia was quietly talking with Han Manny below the stage. When the camera focused on him, he displayed a polite smile.
"Doomsday" stole the spotlight that night, winning numerous awards. The comments section of the live broadcast exploded with excitement.
"Why didn't President Nie go up to receive the award? I want to see President Nie!"
"A few years ago, Sejia produced some mediocre films, but tonight they turned the tide and impressed everyone."
"I used to mock President Nie for running out of ideas, but it turns out he wrote the script and composed all the music for 'Doomsday.' The special effects were also done in-house by Sejia. President Nie is indeed impressive!"
"President Nie's eyes are so dazzling! Is it because he knows his husband is watching? His gaze suddenly becomes gentle when looking at the camera. I feel like if President Nie blinks, stars will fall out of his eyes!"
Throughout the night, although the film was the main focus, everyone online seemed more interested in discussing Nie Jia. Ignoring the work, the discussion centered around his golden eyes, as if this person had suddenly emerged, shining brightly.
Lin Haoran was also watching the live broadcast of the film festival. He looked at the screen, where Nie Jia exuded confidence and pride. For the first time, he realized that Nie Jia could truly showcase his talent only after leaving him, bringing him both happiness and bitterness. For Nie Jia, he seemed more like a calamity.
Qin Huai came to Xia City due to contract matters. As Lin Haoran's good friend, he stayed because he knew Lin Haoran was going through the darkest period of his life. One day, he came to the company to find Lin Haoran. As soon as he entered, he caught a glimpse of the scene on the computer screen. Annoyed, he went over and turned off the monitor. "Stop watching!"
Lin Haoran's eyes were red from staying up late. He looked up at Qin Huai and asked, "Is there something wrong?"
"Your grandmother passed away." Qin Huai said, "My dad told me just now and asked me to inform you."
Lin Haoran was stunned for a moment, then a strange joy appeared in his eyes. "I'm going to Qin City!"
Qin Huai looked at him with an expression of helpless anger. "Are you going to Qin City to escort your grandmother or to see Nie Jia?"
Lin Haoran ignored him and immediately asked his secretary to book the earliest flight to Qin City.
Qin Huai sat on the sofa with an angry expression. "He's already married. What can you do by going to Qin City? Let me tell you, your uncle is not as simple as he seems on the surface. My grandfather is fucking wary of him. Don't mention now, even if you were in your prime and became the heir of the Shi family, what could you do? Back then, your elder brother Lin Xian managed to get my grandfather's signature. I suspected that your uncle was behind supporting Lin Xian to balance you. With just a Lin Xian, if he really had the ability, your mother, not being stupid, wouldn't have given up on him."
"I know." Lin Haoran said heavily. He had sensed it long ago.
Qin Huai continued, "Moreover, your uncle has been low-key for so many years, and it's likely that he did it out of consideration for your grandmother. Now that your grandmother has passed away, his only consideration is gone. Who knows what he might do? It's better for you not to get involved. He has a good relationship with Nie Jia now, often being photographed by paparazzi. He probably knows everything you did to Nie Jia before. With your mother in Qin City, the Shi family has a complicated background. You don't need to worry about it; don't go."
"I just want to go see him; I won't do anything extra." Lin Haoran said.
Qin Huai frowned, "Your Lin family's crisis has just passed, can't you focus on more important matters? Although I signed the contract with you, the investor is my dad. I can't make decisions. If you can't fill this gap in Lin Group for the next three years, you'll be associated with my dad!"
"I know, my dad is here too. I'll just take a look at him and come back." Lin Haoran replied.
After all, his grandmother had passed away. Although Lin Haoran's intentions were not on alcohol, Qin Huai advised him well. If Lin Haoran didn't appear at the funeral, he would lose face even more among the prestigious families in Qin City. Seeing his persistence, Qin Huai didn't bother anymore.
The old lady's funeral was not grand. She led a quiet life with few friends, and in her later years, she had been bedridden. She passed away peacefully in the first snow.
Finally, at the funeral, Lin Haoran saw Nie Jia as he wished. Nie Jia stood in the snow wearing a knee-length black coat, his face radiating a faint porcelain-like glow. He looked like an elegant and delicate porcelain statue, and the snow couldn't compare to him. Lin Haoran watched him quietly, as if he had never known him before.
It wasn't until Shi Chen finished offering flowers to the old lady and walked out that he gently wiped the snowflakes off Nie Jia's eyelashes. Naturally, he put his arm around Nie Jia's waist, and they left the funeral together.
At that moment, Lin Haoran finally gave up completely but still stared absentmindedly at the blurred figures of the two.
Qin Huai and Fei Ying, standing not far away, exchanged a glance, shaking their heads with a sigh.
Who knew he had such deep feelings for Nie Jia, and why he had been so ruthless to him back then.
The atmosphere at the funeral was solemn but not heavy. No one felt pain or regret for the old lady's passing. The funeral was just a formality. Only Shi Lao sat silently on the side, hands pressing on his cane, lost in thought. He had lived recklessly, done many things that disappointed the old lady, and now, with his wife gone, it was unclear how he felt.
Shi Yiyuan, dressed in black, stood in front of the memorial portrait. She placed a white rose down and turned to look at the silently distracted Shi Lao. Her eyes revealed a dangerous sharpness. She whispered to the person beside her, "I see my father is a bit overwhelmed with grief. Let Dr. Xu come to check on him tonight, to avoid any issues."
The person below replied, "Yes, Miss Shi."
A day passed without much disturbance. Lin Haoran came to Qin City but didn't cause any trouble; he remained quiet.
At night, Nie Jia called Lin Xian. Even without KK monitoring, he could accurately guess what ruthless actions Shi Yiyuan, a person with a heart of stone, would take when forced. On the day of his wife's death, this reason was perfect for Shi Yiyuan.
"Why are you opening the window? Be careful not to catch a cold!" Shi Chen, having finished showering, saw Nie Jia standing by the open window, talking on the phone. He immediately raised his eyebrows and walked over, closing the window with a snap.
"Just letting some fresh air in." Nie Jia said helplessly.
When Lin Xian heard Shi Chen's voice from the other end, he stopped talking and hung up the phone.
Shi Chen untied his bathrobe and wrapped Nie Jia in it, warming him with his freshly showered, scorching body. "What wicked plan were you discussing just now?"
Nie Jia, with his cold hands, touched Shi Chen all over. "Shi Yiyuan wants to kill Shi Lao."
Shi Chen, uninterested in this matter, lowered his head and left some red marks on Nie Jia's neck. "Ignore them."
"I didn't care; I just told Lin Xian." Nie Jia was pushed down onto the bed by him and continued to moan throughout the night. It continued well into the early morning, infuriating Shi Chen.
After the funeral, Shi Yiyuan invited a doctor to check on Shi Lao. Lin Xian and Nie Jia talked on the phone and hadn't slept. Lin Xian, after comforting his wife and child to sleep, silently sat on the terrace, drinking.
Approaching midnight, Lin Xian got up and walked through the chilly hall to Shi Lao's room.
Pushing open the door, he heard Shi Lao gasping heavily and the howling wind. Lin Xian scanned the room; the Saint Bernard dog that had been lying in the bedroom was gone. There was a large hole in the window, seemingly just big enough for the Saint Bernard to come and go.
Countless cold winds were pouring into the room. Lin Xian, dressed in a crisp suit and shiny leather shoes, exuded an elite aura. He walked calmly to the bedside. Shi Lao was breathing heavily, gasping for air, exhaling more than inhaling. Seeing Lin Xian, he reached out desperately for help.
But Lin Xian slapped his hand away abruptly.
"You've been injected with a large dose of animal hormones. Adrenaline secretion is excessive. Even if the forensic experts can detect it, they'll think you died from excessive fright. And you've raised a giant dog. It went crazy on the night your wife died, breaking out of the window, causing a terrifying commotion. It scared you to death." Lin Xian spoke with indifference, calmly turning his nameless ring.
Shi Lao, knowing that further delay meant certain death, besides shock, now showed fear in his eyes. "It... it's you!"
"Not me." Lin Xian sat casually on the nearby chair, looking at the dying old man with eyes that carried a hint of evil. "It's your daughter, whom you carefully cultivated for decades. Don't wrongly accuse me, Grandpa. I don't have the guts for this. Besides, I'm riding high now. Everyone knows I'm the future heir to your fortune. Why would I harm you?"
"Save me... the Shi family will
be yours immediately..." Shi Lao struggled to grasp the bedsheet, sweating profusely, a mixture of urgency and fear in his expression.
"Somebody once asked me, whether I wanted power or money." Lin Xian looked at the eyes of the old man, now clouded and confused, his tone as chilling as ice, "I chose money."
