Black powder military rifles of the 1860s-1880s are a really enjoyable group of guns. A lot of them are relatively reasonably priced, and they are actually pretty easy to reload for. The unavailability of factory ammunition (for most, although not so much for the Trapdoor) makes them seem like a daunting prospect, but for a pretty simple investment in tools and time one can make up ammunition and have a lot of fun with rifles like this.

That's the idea behind a new series here on black powder military rifles. Each month, my friend - and handloader - Tom and I will take out a different model to have some fun at the range and compare how they handle. And then we will show you how to make the ammunition for them. So grab your pith helmet, pause "Zulu" and join us! Today is Episode Three: the Remington Rolling Block!

At ~ the 2:09 mark, what Ian is *trying* to say is "The Rolling Block was the FAL of its day..." 😄

AH! the mauser... the ak... the brown bess of the single shot BP rifles. maybe not the greatest looks but one can hardly argue about its service record. some may like a ton of flavors, I like easy ammo logistics as few caliber as I can. so for me if I'd be looking for a rolling block.. 303 or 30/30 most likely.

I really enjoy this new series, you guys are doing a great job. Question: are rolling blocks supposed to ejector or just extract as we saw in your demo. Comment: The rolling block is, I would say, the best of the single shot designs. Springfield Armory assembled over 33,000 of them but still chose to make new trapdoors instead. I seem to recall that one of the issues was that the government objected to paying a royalty on each rifle. Seems they could have just bought the design and made them under license. But they didn't.

A forearm bandolier would be good for prone shooting.

Daniel Standridge

Awesome. I picked up a rolling block in .43 Egyptian. Doubtful I'll ever get to shoot it but owning it will do for now.
