Colt Viper: A Rare Snake and a Great Revolver (Ad-free)

Colt has released seven different revolvers named after snakes, and they have become a popular niche collection for many people. The Python is by far the best known, but several others are very rare. One of these is the Colt Viper, of which only a few thousand were made and only in 1977. The Viper is fundamentally a variation of the Police Positive Special with an aluminum alloy frame and a 4" barrel. They were all chambered for .38 Special, and in fact the only variations are in the finish - either blued or nickeled.

Yeah, I myself didn’t even know this gun existed until Ian made this video. (Incidentally, I own a 4” Colt King Cobra.)

Thanks for showing that Colt Viper off. I wasn't aware of it but will now be looking. I'm sure the price of one will be stunning. I have a S&W 95 which is also a fixed sight model but in 357 mag/38 Spl., Stainless 4" and looks identical to the Colt, except it's much heavier with it's bull barrel. I happen to love the simplicity of it and got it when a whole box of them was being sold by a prominent shop in Albuquerque. They were turned in by a police agency and that shop was famous for getting those police turn-in's and selling them reasonably. I got the pick of the box at the time and the pistol was in very good condition externally and pristine internally.

Well, that's a new one on me. Looks like a neat little piece. Any idea why it didn't catch on?

The Boa.

If this is the 2nd rarest snake gun, what is number 1?

Gee, what a weird concept: fixed sight revolver, too big for pocket carry, too needlessly small for a duty rig. Frame probably too light for the coming +P and +P+ loads that made the .38 spl. relevant for a few more years. Colt suffered under the worst management in the firearms business for decades. But they did also make some real classics.

Agree, revolvers are great. thanks for the video.

Such a cool name. 🐍🔫

as with a sw K or ruger police service six.. fixed sights good size all you need nothing you don't. outstanding. I just love revolvers. did those hold up well or are they famous to get shot to scrap metal? must carry great though.
