Moons Out Goons Out 2024 Overview: Yeah, I Ran a High Point (Ad-free)

Last weekend we ran Moons Out Goons Out 2024, a night rifle match presented by Tactical Night Vision Company at the Echo Valley Training Center. The match was a fantastic success, and I figured I'd give you some overview takeaways to the whole event before posting my complete stages runs later this week. I did run the match twice, once in Active division with a Hi-Point carbine and BE Meyers MAWL IR laser module and once in Passive division with a prototype Q Boombox and an AGM Clarion thermal scope. By doing it in that way, I managed to handicap both my runs, and did...not very well.

Thanks to our greta match sponsors! Thanks to them, we were able to make this a great event with an outstanding prize table:

TNVC

AGM Global Vision

BE Meyers

Brownells

Gorilla Ammunition

Q

Refuge Medical

T-Rex Arms

Varusteleka

Virginia Citizens Armory

So for the MP5, you would need one of those weird adapter things that has a claw on the bottom and picatinny ladder on top? I have no idea how you would attach a light or a telescope to a Colt SMG. So, a SMG/carbine style rifle with picatinny ladder is the recommended weapon for this type of match?

David T Klein

A carbine or PCC would be just fine, but you would want one with good options for attaching a light/laser/optic. Anything predating the ubiquitous use of picatinny rail would be a difficult choice to set up.

Worse, I expect.

So, Hi Point wasn't a good fit, but I like the idea of a SMG/carbine type rifle, especially with a sound suppressor on it. Would a good SMG/carbine type rifle (like the MP5 or the Colt SMG (and very excited, Palmetto State is coming out with a clone of the DoE nuke-transport version of the Colt SMG)) with a sound suppressor be a viable option? They are certainly less noisy and less muzzle-flash than a typical .223 CAR15 or the like, and they are small and compact for running around in the woods. Would an infrared telescope (modern-day equivalent of the Starlight scope, or similar) work better than the thermal telescope? When you said the targets were unheated, I wondered how a thermal telescope would help at all. Thanks for this interesting review of a match with two rifles I doubt any of us would have thought of

Hi point: better or worse than Othais’s Sub 2000?

Thanks for the video. Interesting breakdown on the uses of thermal. I believe your instincts are correct that in "real world scenarios" the thermal would be more useful than it was in shooting cold steel silhouettes . How often would one be looking for a cold steel ?door? in a sneaky mission I do not know but in that instance I would think the availability of other options after assuring no thermal signatures were around would be inherent in the mission.
