Hogue Avenger vs M1911 at the Range (Ad-free)
Added 2024-01-06 12:00:01 +0000 UTC
Yesterday we looked at where the Hogue Avenger came from and how it works; today I'm out at the range to test it out against a nicely customized M1911...
A solution in search of a problem.

No, I did not. We originally planned to, but when we couldn't get a full magazine through it that seemed less relevant.

Awesome video Ian! I had the same impressions you did when I took it out before lending it to you. I'm not good enough to extract any benefit from how quickly it cycles. I brought a tuned Cajun Gunworks CZ97 with the custom barrel bushing mod as a comparison and the difference in how the Avenger felt when cycling was very apparent. I had one nosedive in the 40 rounds I fired that day, pretty sure I was shooting 185 grain Gecko. I couldnt be happier with the videos, you did an amazing job finding info on it and I'm grateful for the disassembly portion. Thanks!!! For any one interested in paper groups I'm afraid I haven't grouped it, just a function check but impressions were it was absolutely the equal of my CGW CZ97BE.

Good to know! I'm not sure where I'd read the comment about the Hogue Avenger not working well with the 230 gr. bullets. I do know that lever delayed blowbacks are sensitive to the weights of bullets they fired like the French FAMAS assault rifle.

Did you attempt to fire any groups on paper to determine its potential for accuracy?

the feed issues are unsurprising, and actually explain why the feed-ramp was a separate changeable part. they must have attempted to iterate the problem into submission before finally settling for something "good enough to sell." I had a similar challenge getting 1911 mags to run reliably in an AR PCC (BSE model 19-15 if anyone's interested) and the actual solution requires you to rotate the magwell geometry to compensate to the non-tilting barrel, which obviously wasn't something they were able to do using standard 1911 frames.

I was using Fiocchi 230 - it's the only .45ACP ammo I keep around.

Ian, you didn't say what loads you were using in the Hogue Avenger. I'd read that it wouldn't take the 230 gr. hardball and that you had use 185 gr. loads.

first: this doesn't look ANY less recoil. true statement. one at least knows WHEN it cease working. LoL even if less muzzle flip.. it is THAT much more complicated to hit "not worth it". not even to mention like running through 8rd isn't much. if it can't do that....
