I asked a good friend who had been an Marine officer in Korea and fought in the Chosin area about his thoughts on the M1 carbine. He said it was great. It always worked and was very effective. He told me that where the myth of stopping power came up was that the skinny "chinks" wore very bulky padded overcoats. If you aimed center mass they always went down. If you just hit the coat you probably didn't hit the man, and they kept coming.

The "made by Mattel" was a derisive term given to a very poorly introduced, inadequately trialed rifle issued directly into combat. Many soldiers had trained with the M14 and then were issued the M16 when they arrived in Nam. Ordnance had monkeyed with the powder and then failed to procure and issue .22 caliber cleaning rods. Anyway, the short answer is that as initially issued, they didn't work reliably and they felt "cheap".

2023-10-17 13:25:16 +0000 UTCI feel like the front handguard on the early M16s was the thing that spawned so much of the "it's a toy" nonsense. If the front handguard had been something like the stamped M16A2 grenadier handguard, Colt could've used nylon lowers without spawning the Mattel Myth. I will also add something that Paul Harrell mentioned re: the .30 Carbine, namely that a hunter's education pamphlet circulated for many years listed the MV of the .30 Carbine as about 2/3 of the actual value (vaguely 1500 vs the real 2100 FPS for a 110 gr bullet). This was data from an ostensibly authoritative source circulated to young shooters in an era when it was much harder to verify the truth. Tje impact of "I shot that guy 10 times with my M1A1 and he kept coming until Jim shot him with his trusty Thompson!" would be magnified by seemingly trustworthy data which appeared to confirm the falsehood.

2023-10-16 23:32:55 +0000 UTChey an ak is maybe shorter but sure as hell the 30carb will be lighter. mine runs rather fine. surface looks rough though magazins are file fitted the darn thing runs. can't possibly beat the handiness of that little carbine. guess NOBODY ever said I wish I had a heavier rifle. I like the caliber. that whole sytem is so cute. carbine mags ammo. loaded mags are surprisingly heavy though.

2023-10-16 15:51:56 +0000 UTCI have an M2 Carbine that runs very well. It needed only extractor and ejector parts to run nearly 100% with even cheap KCI 30 rd mags. It is a platform that can be very reliable - but temperamental if parts are worn - which many are well worn being 75 years old.

2023-10-16 15:07:04 +0000 UTCFor some reasons - the science of 45 acp not being an ideal pistol or SMG cartridge eluded the FBI and many law enforcement in the 1990s. HK UMP, Kriss Vector development was around 45acp vs 9mm for some reason - Sometimes the customer is not right!
