A Mystery MP-5 in .45ACP...Will it Run?

The fine folks at DSA had this rather mysterious MP5 in their reference collection, and we decided to take it out to the range to see if it would run. It's an MP-5, but chambered for .45ACP using altered M3 Grease Gun magazines. The original manufacturer is unclear; it's marked as being imported form Turkey, but does not appear to have been something that MKE made. So is it Pakistani? Or just someone's one-off project? I really don't know.

As for functioning, we found that only one of the magazines would work, and that only when downloaded to less than 10 rounds. It definitely has more recoil than a standard 9mm MP5, but is still pretty controllable...

I think you will find out that the gun is most likely ammo centric in that it prefers one flavor over another as I have discovered in my MPA-45-SST!!! ๐Ÿค ๐Ÿ‘

In an AR, the mags are sitting vertically, like they were designed in the M3. On this gun, they are at an angle, like regular MP5 magazines.

The grease gun mags work just fine in an AR with a modified magwell although I donโ€™t have a full auto

I think the modified Greasegun magazine doesn't quite work for the thing. Maybe a .45 caliber MP5 could be done better using a UMP45 magazine instead.

The late Bill Fleming who passed in Dec '21 built a number of these in the early 90s and I purchased two for evaluation by the SEALs at NSWC Crane in approximately 1992.

Very cool - would be interesting to see what would happen if they put the 10mm MP5 recoil spring in it

Looks like another project that needs much more development time and effort.

Build it and he will fire it.

ViejoLobo, I disagree. ๐Ÿ˜‰

A custom job by a fan of Jeff Cooper?

And if wanting an SMG in .45 ACP, the classic Thompson, M3 Grease Gun, UMP45, and other models that are specifically for this caliber are the practical options. As for my opinion, Iโ€™ll go for the original classic Thompson, and yes that the WW2 Thompson looks a lot like an MP5 in .45 ACP and it functions like a champ.

If the HK MP5 in .45 ACP were to function like a champ as the trusty 9 mm does, then it could have been designated as the HK55, the first 5 for SMG, and the second 5 for .45 ACP [11.43 x 23 mm], although never used in HKโ€™s classic nomenclature.
