AR57: Fun Times with a Tiny Carbine (aka FSS Hurricane) (ad-free)

Thanks to MagPul for sponsoring this video! I was happy to use one of their new Daka Grid rifle cases today - it's a very cool system that will be of great use for me both because of its modular configurability and its excellent security.
The AR-57 is a system developed by Rhineland Arms in the early 2000s which uses the FN P90 magazine (and its 5.7x28mm cartridge) in an AR upper. The magazine mounts on top of the barrel, and it ejects downward through what would normally be the AR magazine well. Any standard AR lower can be used, although the company (AR57; a separate firm spun off for this product) sold complete guns using OEM receivers form Aero Precision.
The uppers were made in three barrel lengths, and I have here an example of a first generation full-length rifle and a second generation SBR with a 6.25" barrel and a GSL Technology suppressor nested inside the handguard.
Further thanks to Battlestar Gatlactica for the loan of the 1st generation rifle!
Yes, but they are not shipping them with regular orders yet.

When you received the case from Magpul, the angled blocks were part of the whole interior kit? Can't wait for those to be in stock.

WOW, it includes a magazine launcher/disassembly device! Sorry to see the destroyed mag, but glad you are not hurt. I guess you'll need spare video camera batteries to capture all manner of situations.

Neat. I’d order one now if the quality issues were worked out.

I have a new AR57 upper in 16", but have been looking for a 11-12". Do you know if they are planning to make those?

I had an opportunity to buy a used one of these uppers a few years ago but at $680 plus the price of ammo and the price of magazines I opted out on that and wound up buying a Master Peace Arms STT-10-T instead!! 🤠👍

As a happy PS90 owner I would be greatly concerned regarding the AR-57 OOB problem. I'm currently using a 3D printed magazine loader that is barely better than nothing.

that makes a very vaery short p90 A LOT longer even with a short barrel. though 50rd... mag change with some speed? ok.. rather a no. not my cup of brew in general but the p90 original sights seemed kind of nice. not a bad transport you've got there. how bad are the prices for those magazins? as the caliber and ALL guns chambered are outlawed in germany... must be somewhat more than your typical pmag? out of battery is bad!

The CMMG 5.7’s use radial delayed blowback so would be a fun comparison. It has an out of battery safety since it uses a rotating bolt. I’ve seen them using FN 5.7 mags or a conversion mag for standard AR lowers.

I enjoy how Ian jokingly acknowledges his awareness of youtube's absurd restriction on showing magazine insertion, then proceeds to give us gratuitous close-up shots of it for like 5 minutes straight.

The p90 magazine layout is really cool I wish we had more like it in other calibers.

The out-of-battery discharge might be avoided shaping the slot in the bolt a bit differently. Adding (or not removing) material under the rear end of the firing pin, so that the hammer doesn't reach the pin until the bolt is far enough forward. Just a click to remind the shooter to check the action.

Bought an upper from AR57 back in 2011. It was a lot of fun. Clever design. It ran flawlessly. I used a 556-magazine body to catch my brass. Thanks for the review. I see uppers are being advertised online again.
