Evaluating the Modern Stocked Pistol: USW-320 at Desert Brutality 2022 (ad-free)

This year I was able to shoot Desert Brutality twice - one during the normal match and once the day before as part of "Trooper" division. That's where you carry all of your gear for the whole match (including food and all ammo) through all of the stages, shoot the whole match in one day, and don't get to use anything you didn't bring with you in the morning.

I figured this would be a good opportunity to try out the Brugger & Thomet USW-320. It's a SIG 320 pistol (registered as an SBR, for legality) in a B&T grip module with a folding stock; really a modern incarnation of the classic stocked-pistol concept. The match this year had no shooting longer than 200 yards, and much of it was done in 50 yard pistol bays. So I figured I could get a good challenge with the long-range stages, but should be able to complete everything else reasonably well. So, let's see if I was right!

Or stocked tangent sighted HP with OEM 20 rounders?

ViejoLobo

I would LOVE to see a head-to-head with this gun and a stocked Artillery Luger, just for the hell of it.

Tore Martinussen

The comp was remarkably loud and concussive, that's why I removed it.

What I'm learning from this is not that the pistol is inaccurate, but that the sight has excessive parallax when mounted on that pistol and used at long range. Maybe a rifle-style red dot instead?

ViejoLobo

Yeah, this is making me really curious what caliber/action/sights would let you extend that out to 200 yards in the same size package. It feels as though it's very possible with current technology, especially current sights.

Michael Ford

What fun! Outside running around, tossing heavy objects, and shooting. What more could one want!

Paul Ingraham

something like a roni would maybe has a better stock but still short barrel no better ballistic. for the kind of money... rather a marlin camp carbine or something like that with better use of the powder? advantage 10mil?- sniper sidearm? cop in general?

Guido Schriewer

So only the the MP5 and the roller locked AR 9mm are about the only semi accurate longer range 9mm pdw choices? Nope I am not even close to sure of this statement!

Derrel Carter

not sure what style holster but making it fit could be possible

The longest barrel option is only going to give you about an inch more of barrel length. I don't think that would be much of a difference at 200 yards.

Michael Baggott

Also interested if you think a longer barrel would've helped? I noticed you removed the compensator, just to save weight or something else?

James Caldwell

Great video, and conclusions.

Terry

Do you think switching to the longer barrel option would improve the long-range accuracy?

Ian F

TABLE TABLE TABLE!

Bob Kauer

I kinda assumed it was more a Pistol+ sort of thing so not surprised it was struggling at being used as a carbine. Would be interesting if someone made something ground up, not based on anything else to be like this rather than based on existing pistol designs whether you can get more out of the concept but I doubt anyone would bother
