It is speculated that Salamence are descended from a similar species known as Roaring Moon. Though there is much speculation behind the lack of feathers in the former, the most common is that the flight patterns of Roaring Moons were too loud for clever prey, which was too high a cost for their oft-damaged feathers after unsuccessful hunts.
