You commented that Takopi's mother didn't look like the other happians, which is definitely true, but it's worth noting that what we saw likely isn't the main body, just one of her tentacles. "Tako" (タコ) means octopus in Japanese, so I think we can see the happians as strange alien octopuses and the mother as a super big strange alien octopus whose main body is off screen. That's also why it's not the hugest jump in logic for both Marina and Shizuka to name him Octopus-pi (タコピ) for both his appearance and speaking pattern (still touching and tragic, though).
