Reach for the stars

This is from my Mallorca workshop last year.
And it speaks to why it is very sensible to edit your images.

If you have ever seen my composition course, you know that one of the defining factors is that the foreground shape must separate visually from the background.

In this case, it didn’t, as the giant lava ball is the crucial element in this, and it has the same color as the background.

So I made a mask (select the subject in Photoshop), fine-tuned that within 5 minutes, and made a gradient that fades the effect towards the bottom of the image.
Then, the background was modified with a curves layer.
Those 5-7 minutes extra made this a stunning image instead of a “meh” image with no potential claim to fame.

PS:
Upon reflection, I’m a bit annoyed by the rock under The Endless Sinner's armpit - what do you think?
I noticed it when editing but decided to leave it - but now I think I’ve changed my mind…
