I've never understood the point of the 8 schools, as the spells in each school were very arbitrary. Healing magic being one of the big ones. Because it has to fit in one school.
Wizards are so hard to theme around as a result. I tried making a melee wizard with a spear and picked Conjuration so I could teleport around the battlefield. I didn't want summons but I was stuck with them and messed with my concept. I wound up switching to Transmutation and taking a bunch of Jump spells instead. Still not what I really wanted but that's what the 8 schools gave me.

I disagree about the power level of the wizard in the case of two GMs. I don't see how they can be said to be 'roughly equal' in power in any sense. More to the point, this 'Mother may I?' design philosophy is only going to lead to more conflict at tables. Players may feel bad if the GM denies them their favorite spell and GM might feel pressured to adhere to players' wishes.
