July 25 is the day of the Antifascist Pastasciutta. On July 25, 1943 Mussolini fell and was arrested. It was celebrated all over Italy, and in Emilia Romagna the Cervi brothers organized a big pastasciutta party for the whole village.
Every year this tradition is repeated to commemorate this event.
Unfortunately, liberation from Nazi-fascism did not come immediately. Mussolini was freed by the Nazis and set up a puppet government in central and northern Italy, and it took 2 years of partisan fights together with the Allies to liberate that land. There were many retaliations against those who celebrated in those days; even the seven Cervi brothers, now part of the Resistance, were captured and shot at the end of 1943.
Eat a plate of pasta, besides being good, today it is a gesture of struggle against the unfortunately still many fascists around the world!
