Finrod's dormouse - finished (and some wintry walk photos)

Finished this last night! I love, love, love that I can do all the detail I want again painlessley. A watercolour friend asked me last week if I didn't miss the feeling of pigment on paper. (That, of course, assumes that I've thrown all my watercolours in the bin, which I patently did not do.)

But yesterday, I thought about her question again and realised - what I missed far, far more was to be able to put in little intricate details into my paintings, to bring out more of a rendering effect where I wanted to, and achieve the end result I wanted. Do I value the outcome over the process? I think I do. I enjoy the process immensely, but I'm always working towards a goal, that moment when you put in your sig, call it done and spend several minutes looking at it (and hopefully being happy).

I went sort-of-ice-skating with my daughter yesterday (January's rains caused the local river to flood the fields, and the subsequent cold froze them completely over, so you can go ice-skating between the stalks of last year's crops, and even in the lower parts of the little wood. It looked absolutely magical, with the forest floor visible underneath crystal-clear, six-inch ice. I've never seen anything like it.

This is not a pond - it's just a hollow in the woods. You can see the rim of where the floods initially went - a higher broken ice ridge.

Frozen forest floor, six inches deep in ice. =O
