The Death of Fëanor - finished

"Then his sons raised up their father and bore him back towards Mithrim. But as they drew near to Eithel Sirion and were upon the upward path to the pass over the mountains, Fëanor bade them halt; for his wounds were mortal, and he knew that his hour was come. And looking out from the slopes of Ered Wethrin with his last sight he beheld far off the peaks of Thangorodrim, mightiest of the towers of Middle-earth, and knew with the foreknowledge of death that no power of the Noldor would ever overthrow them; but he cursed the name of Morgoth thrice, and laid it upon his sons to hold to their oath, and to avenge their father. Then he died; but he had neither burial nor tomb, for so fiery was his spirit that as it sped his body fell to ash, and was borne away like smoke; and his likeness has never again appeared in Arda, neither has his spirit left the halls of Mandos. Thus ended the mightiest of the Noldor, of whose deeds came both their greatest renown and their most grievous woe."

Watercolour, gel pen and coloured pencil on Fabriano #5 paper, 24x30 cm.

Can I say I love the "soul" effect there? I'm glad my gel-pen was up to that!

Such an amazing piece! This is such a great turning point in the book as the brothers have lost their leader in this venture and everything just goes downhill from here and you've managed to capture such an important moment so well. I love it :D

Wow! This is stunning!

Erin-Claire

So great it just jumped into my Etsy cart!

Bonnie Marques

Haha, it was, but the five copies I'd put up were gone within an hour or so! I've renewed the listing. XD

Talk about overachievement. *.* This piece is just stunning. I can't wait to have a print of it. I love the expression of each brother... my poor things! Is it in your Etsy shop already? I couldn't find it. Anyway, I DO need to wait a couple of weeks before ordering. Atonement was going to be my next order, but now I'm having second thoughts...

Laura Michel

Just WOW!

That's something that really strikes you, doesn't it - that these people didn't really have any concept for death? Each of us grows up knowing that we will (hopefully) outlive our parents, but even the passage "he had neither burial or tomb" raises the question - would any of these be something they thought of immediately? How had they buried Finwë, the only dead relative they ever mourned? Then there's Maedhros' shock, not just that his father could die, but actually leave him in charge. I bet they all thought Fëanor was truly immortal and could not possibly leave them like this.

Jenny Dolfen

Oh, I definitely think he's already dead here!

I love this painting. And I get the symbol of depicting Fëanor’s fëa in process of leaving. I just don’t think that it could have left his hröa gradually, before it was completely dead. All sons look great. The oldest and the youngest came out the best. Love the subtle differences in twins’ hair colors.

Tanya

Absolutely stunning *_* This is gorgeous ! Congratulations! I'm looking forward to have it on my wall <3

What can I say that I haven't said on the work-in-progress posts? This is absolutely stunning. Fantastic. The "departing soul" effect works really well. The glow on Feanor's breastplate really suggests that he's going to burst into flames any second now. And all the sons have their own expression of grief, loss and confusion. Magnificent. Can't wait for the print to be available!

Lyra

Spectacular!

This piece is stunning. Such amazing work, especially after such hardship with it!
