A new painting toy and sketchbook

Whoa you guys, I finally tried out my Etchr sketchbook! I'd got it earlier this summer, but being a good girl, I filled my old sketchbook before breaking in the new one. (And was that ever hard!)

It's called "The Perfect Sketchbook" and it really is a marvel. Normally, sketchbook makers really skimp on paper - this one is a bit more expensive, but still not as prohibitively so as some others. It's 100% cotton, heavyweight paper - a dream to do washes in!

The paint is a new acquisition too. (Another, cough.) It's from a Chinese manufacturer called "Superior Watercolours", and some of the paints are actually pretty good (I'm sure one of the blues is actual Ultramarine). I've combined two sets with my favourite paints. It folds and is really easy to carry around. I painted all of these at various school gatherings (parents' nights, conferences, and the like). Just a few random landscapes that I would have preferred to be in at the time, hee.

Welcome to new Patron, kanako

My first conference sketches were also just doodles. It's always a question of how interactive they are and how active you need to be, but if it's 3 hours of listening to the headmaster and hearing a few questions, and I can sit on my chair the whole time, then it's easy to commit yourself to a painting or two! I'm down to thirty minutes now - as soon as I know I'll be in this spot for thirty minutes, with my ears occupied but the rest of me at leisure, I'll break out the paints. Yeah, that is a good question! There's a good, similar small set I can recommend here: https://www.amazon.de/Aquarell-Watercolour-Portable-Aquarellfarbe-Bleistift/dp/B07DJ7MQN2 but you make sure it's exactly this one, and the box isn't any pastel colours. XD For the actual leporello type thingies, the small set really is about 50% crap, but the large one had some really good colours. I bought the large one (38 colours) by accident thinking it was the 18 colour one, and then it was way too big for my purposes. So I got the 18 colour one as well, and had the other one for plenty of spare parts.

I'm in awe! How do you manage to get so much proper painting done during conferences? I barely even dare to doodle... That sketchbook sounds great. I have to wonder about the paint though - if some of the colours are actually pretty good, how many of them aren't?

I can't say whether my experience there is a universal one, but in my case, long periods without drawing have always resulted in periods of absolutely kickass work. I had this long stretch in 2017, and again in 2018, where I didn't draw for months at a time. They all ended with absolute drawing frenzies. I've described the phenomenon in my blog a few times (and no doubt here as well, but Patreon is a nightmare to search, ha). https://goldseven.wordpress.com/2012/07/31/art-slump-next-stop-drawing-frenzy/ https://goldseven.wordpress.com/2017/11/02/a-herbology-lesson/

Aw, I've been thinking of you a lot, Steve! Glad to know you've weathered it, and are on the mend. <3

Since you mentioned a sketchbook -- a research question: do drawing and painting skills degrade quickly if you don't get the practice in? As in, an artist character faces the prospect of a long period where it will be difficult -- how long would make her worried? (Besides the fact that she wants to work.)

Yay. Major infected disk surgery five weeks ago and I am starting to feel human again. I had a fancy new Ondu 6x6 pinhole camera camera waiting for me when I got back home from the hospital. It's almost looking interesting. (See my Instagram.) I have not done any photography since last October. The brain has been too numb for anything creative.

Yep I think so!

Wow, I didn't even realise they were different things! Yes, that's the one I've got. The Perfect sketchbook has even thicker paper then? Whew!

Jenny Dolfen

Ah they're so enjoyable to paint in! Just gave mine a try recently too ๐Ÿฅฐ Such a difference in how paint behaves, i.e. more expected behaviour. ๐Ÿ™‚ I think you have the etchr sketchbook though? That was the one through Kickstarter. https://etchrlab.com/collections/sketchbooks
