T-shirt design! =)

New Patron welcome time! Hi, Alysha, Sarah, and Holly!

I've been asked - a little last-minute - to design a t-shirt for the Birmingham event in August (yes, very last minute!), and the idea I immediately had was this - Tolkien's silhouette, with the most important scenes from his works. I chose Beren and Lúthien, of course (sit down, Feanor, they are more important than you), a dragon attack (could be Gondolin), and the Shire.

Need to finish this by Thursday. =O

The last week of school was really draining, and I'm only slowly getting into anything resembling an art mood. I have to force myself even more right now, as I got some news yesterday that felt as if it was from a really, really bad film. My parents told me that a childhood friend of mine, whom I had not seen for more than twenty years, had died. They sent me the obituary in the paper. There were no dates, just the years of her life. Puzzled, I googled her, and was horrified to find that she had been found dead in her apartment ONE DAY after I had been to the same town with my class. I went 150 yards past her. I even thought of her, and wondered what had become of her. She had been lying there for months. Probably murdered. Probably drug-related. She must have completely broken with her family - her abusive father died a few years ago; her helpless mother (plus her severely mentally and physically disabled brother) didn't miss her enough to investigate sooner. I don't even know how to process this. I had thought of her a lot over the last few weeks, about episodes of our childhood friendship I hadn't thought about in decades. It's as if she was trying to speak to me. And now she's become one of these horrible stories of people rotting in an apartment for months before being found.

I’m just catching up on posts after a month of moving and the chaos that goes with it. Six years ago I had a friend go missing. We tried to help the police find her; I organized search parties to look for her car. They found her body in a ditch, and her husband was arrested and eventually convicted of her murder. I know exactly what you mean when you say that it feels like a film. It didn’t seem like this could possibly be my life I was living. Hugs and sympathy.

I'm really sorry to hear about your friend. Hugs and kisses to you, and my prayers go to her as well. <3

Your design is spectacular! It is so beautiful and illustrates wonderful highlights in Tolkien's stories. Beren and Lúthien is a must! I can not wait to see the final result! I want to attend the Birmingham event someday. I am hoping that I can plan a trip and visit in a few years! Oh no, that is dreadful. It is very interesting to see how your thoughts for someone align when situations, such as these, occur. Please know that you have my sympathy and that I'll keep both you and your friend in my prayers.

Wow the design is really amazing, so much representative of Tolkien’s work ! A very beautiful tribute I think ! :D Thanks for sharing it with us ! I really love to see drafts !! o/ Sorry this is a little late, but those are terrible news about your friend, and I’m really really sorry for your loss. This is the kind of things you think always happends to other and not you, or like only in books or movies x/ Poor woman this always makes me so sad those kind of tragedies… Know that you have all my sympathy !

It did have one good thing come of it. I immediately reached out to two old friends I had also lost sight of. One of them called back yesterday, We had a long, long talk on the telephone and immediately reconnected on every level. <3

I'm so sorry

I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. It's always hard to hear about when someone you used to care about and see so often has something tragic happen. And you're not even able to speak to anyone about it because that whole part of your life is so far removed from your life now. I had something similarly tragic happen with a person from my high school as well and it's really tough.

Stories like this are always both horror and tragedy; I hope she's happier now wherever she is, and I'm sorry for your loss.

Definitely prints, yes!

I look very much forward to wearing a "Design by Dolfen" T-shirt in Birmingham – I shall do so with great pride! :) It is always sad when a life is wasted and when people die alone and undiscovered. Your reaction is, fortunately, both natural and healthy for anyone who is kind-hearted and caring, and it goes to show (if anyone here needed reminding) that you are all of those. You are, as some would say, a "good un" ... Sending virtual hugs (tradable for the real thing in Brum at your discretion).

Second: I am very sorry to hear about your friend. It does sound like a part of a horror movie. If I were writing that movie, her spirit would have been trying to contact someone to solve the mystery. She reached out to you when you were nearby, but it had been too long for you to be the one to act for her. Her spirit finally found someone close enough and recent enough, and her body was found, and the circumstances will be investigated. In my script, it was her way of touching on your childhood friendship, because she remembered you fondly. (I hope that might help? Sorry if it's too silly. You have my sympathies.)

First: that is a wonderful design -- the elements are clearly identifiable, and form a beautiful "snapshot" of the man and his works. I can't wait to see it finished! And I hope the shirt will be more widely available than just the con ... or could you offer prints, perhaps?
