Gimli and other sketchbook things

Welcome, Jennifer, Vivienne, and Emily! <3

I've been rather quiet - I was away on a class trip last weekend, which bound a lot of energy beforehand. My class hasn't been the easiest one these past three years and I was a little apprehensive of how it might go; in the end, the trip made up for a lot of the things of the past few years.

I tried around with Inktense watercolour in my sketchbook during the trip; they're like blocks of crayons, but with ink-based watercolour. They're said to be water-resistant on paper when dry, but that does sound too good to be true - of course they're not really.

I did a few calming, cool landscapes with them last Saturday, while sitting in an indoor trampoline park. my students were jumping, but I always like to be "on land" during those kinds of activities (and that totally is an excuse, yes). It was insanely loud, and insanely hot (36°C on Saturday).

Today, we had a training course at school, which is always a welcome excuse to break out the sketchbook as well. I'd just rewatched the Lord of the Rings, and I noticed again how Gimli is getting on my nerves. I think his only non-goofy moment is "She gave me three." PJ did a lot of things right with Fellowship, but the things he did not get right were painful foreshadowings to the Hobbit

So I re-imagined my own Gimli. The background was done with Inktense paints, but I soon noticed that they turned out rather chalky in the earth tones, so I went for watercolour. (Yes, when we have an education day at school, I bring a fully operational selection of art materials to choose from.)

Some more gilded Galadriel prints are coming soon, for those who missed them!

That sounds like my last trip to Rome! It's appalling how bad weather can ruin such trips. Even more so since any class trips are usually in March/April as a rule... this one was a private one, so we could put it in June.

One of the few things I truly unreservedly love about the movies is the art design and cinematography. The visuals come in second only to the music as reasons why the trilogy will always be some of my favorite movies. The screenwriting, characterization, and the adaptation as a whole... well... it certainly isn't as bad as it could have been, but the soundtrack and cinematography absolutely save it. All that said, your Gimli is dressed much more practically and is clearly a more serious character than the version PJ gave us, and I like yours better.

Interesting he comes across as blond to you. I was going easy on the darks (and he's not quite finished to be honest) but I thought it was brown. ;)

Gimli is supposed to be a serious character. I didn't hate John Rhys Davies performance, but your lovely design brings back memories of how the real thing was for me when I read the book. Tolkien doesn't take lots of time describing characters but for some reason we end up imagining them very clearly.

That's a very cool Gimli design. Visually, I don't dislike the interpretation of the movies (and I think John Rhys Davies did what he could with what he was given), but they become rather overpowering and it's nice to see something different! So glad that your class trip went well! I went on my first class trip in April wand it was... let's call it a valuable learning experience. Bad luck with the weather & location (which would probably have been cool in better weather), no plan B, and some very challenging behaviour did not make it a happy first time.

I very much prefer your Gimli, too! Though I hadn’t thought of him as quite that blond.

Liv Klein

Yes, this Gimli looks much better than PJ's comic relief.
