An all too easy victory

β€œThen Fingon prince of Hithlum rode against him with archers on horseback, and hemmed him round with a ring of swift riders; and Glaurung could not endure their darts, being not yet come to his full armoury.”

In case that, over all this pin madness, you've forgotten the Fingon and Maglor suggestion session: I didn't! This scene was suggested several times, and I really wanted to (re)draw it (the last time, I think, was in 1995).

I ws really scared of all those horseback archers! Then Lintie helped me out with a bunch of fantastic reference shots by people I then found on Instagram, who immediately allowed me to use their photos for this piece. So, a huge thanks goes to Freja Trulsdotter (@Artofliberty) and Erin Jardine (@eyesoferin) for allowing me to use their fantastic photos.

Glaurung is derived from the vision of Inger Edelfeldt, whose Glaurung looks like a bloated, disgusting lizard/crocodile. I think it's perfect. It owes something to Ilon Wikland's despiction of Katla as well, mostly those crazed eyes. Incidentally, is it just me or has this scene never been depicted with a properly flightless Glaurung? Edit: Oh! Of course it has, by our very own Ted Nasmith. :)

More incidentally, Jeremy, how would this be for the Beyond Bree calendar? ^___^

I used the Lazy Nezumi photoshop plugin for the lines here, and gosh, how have I ever drawn in PS without this? It feels like drawing on paper. No jitter, and total control.  πŸ’›

Ted's paintings are always very scenic, very much a wide shot in which you can see everything but at a distance. I like to go the other route completely, leaning into the action and putting the viewer in the middle; more comic than cinema.

Yes!!!! I really wanted this scene! There some very good artists that have done it, but there’s always something slightly wrong... whether Glaurung has wings, there are no riders or other details. This is exactly the way it appears in The Silmarillion. ^^ EDITED: Oh, I hadn't read your comment that Ted Nasmith has painted Fingon's chase of the dragon with a proper Glaurung. I need to go check it out. ^^

Dynamic riders and great Glaurung design:)

AnetteCB

Wow, this looks so good - horses speeding, hair flowing, arrows flying! Glaurung, you oversized toad, someone's about to stick a few arrows in your fat bum! Yay!

Lintie

OOOOOOHH I ALREADY LOVE THIS

Litsen

If only they could have finished him off then and there. So much sadness.

Ohmygosh, I absolutely love Fingon's pose in this. His hair flowing, the aim of the bow... It's so dynamic and beautiful. Can't wait to see how this piece turns out!

There is so much power in this one. The riders look incredible. Already love it so much!

Anjuschka
