Absolutely correct! I have some entire bass chains with a steep, sharp cut in the 300hz range simply because all the distortions inside it made it way too 'beefy' bordering on 'muddy'. Another great general tip for SPAN is to load some of your favorite songs into your DAW and look at how their frequency spectrum looks like within SPAN - great method for learning how to utilise SPAN in your own productions. Also appreciate the feedback, I will definitely be doing more of these videos!

And vice versa, you would cut some from that range if too “beefy”? I know I’ve seen virtual riot cut 300Hz a bunch of times, so that adds up. Thanks for your responses, looking forward to more of these videos. Crazy how much I can learn just from an hour long video

No worries! Another thing I specifically look for in SPAN is that dreaded 150hz - 400hz range. To me that part of the spectrum can make or break a mixdown as in: Too much presence there usually goes hand-in-hand with muddiness, but a severe lack of presence usually indicates I am missing crunch/beef in my mix. For example if I saturate a sub bass, thats the area where I want some subtle additional harmonics to appear to get the sub beefed up!

Super helpful, thanks for that explanation man! I use Span but only because I’ve seen others use it, no idea what I was supposed to be looking for! Appreciate it

Exactly what Jack said! Making sure the spectrum (especially the sub and high frequencies) are even in loudness, as well as checking if the mids (green coloured) and sides (orange coloured) are in balance. For example in low frequency range I try to keep my sides to be about 20% - 60% lower than the mid signal.

What are you looking for when you reference SPAN?
