The hazard of the kind of writing I do is that I need to be emotionally present and accessible to do it, otherwise the prose and narrative don't quite click. That's what happened with yesterday's draft — I was too focused on getting it out the door while juggling other stuff I have going on in my life at the moment.
Fortunately, a patron on the Discord helpfully let me know that the chapter didn't quite land. Why? They had no idea.
Now, don't get me wrong: I don't act on all the feedback I'm given. The vast majority of readers, even devoted readers like yourselves, don't have the necessary background as writers to figure out why something does or doesn't work. People are also very idiosyncratic in their tastes.
But this time, I agreed — it just wasn't quite finished. Two hours of studying it later (which kept me up past my bedtime), I understood why. So, back in the oven it went, and now it's re-emerged, fully baked.
If you've read Chapter 97 before now, sorry. The changes I've made aren't massive in terms of plot, but they do clarify some things, and they cohere the chapter into a narrative that makes more sense thematically and that maintains the appropriate emotions.
Personally, I recommend rereading.
And if you put off reading? Congratulations: laziness pays off again!*
Anyway, for the sake of managing expectations: please don't take this as an invitation for you all to give me your detailed notes on every chapter going forward. By all means, let me know if a chapter does or doesn't do it for you personally, but don't expect that will lead to revisions. This revision is not an indication that I'll fall over myself to keep everyone happy to such an extent that I'll compromise on the art.
