Hello all! Duski here! (for once)
I hope you’re doing well. I’ll cut right to it today. We’ve decided to change up the format of our Patreon. We want to use it more. You’ve probably noticed we don’t post much, (though we’re still here, still making the game!) and after many attempts and resolutions, we still don’t post as much as we’d like to. We’re only two people (two painfully shy people) who’ve always actually been pretty awful at advertising ourselves, and the day-to-day process of making the game is often just… not interesting enough for us to make good Patreon content out of it. I spend huge chunks of time making nothing but UI, nary a pair of boobs in sight, for example. It’s not easy to make UI titillating. But UI is necessary for a game.
The obligation to make large regular updates is just a losing battle, and it’s not conducive to how our little squirrel brains work. We’re squeezing our creative process into a thing that’s not working for us and it’s overall lacking because of that. So, for the foreseeable future we’re turning this Patreon into something more like a tip jar, and we’re doing away with the old structure.
I tend to hold off posting anything because I think ‘I’ll save it for the post’, then the time to post comes around and I’ll not feel it’s going to fit into the whole formal-update thing, so it goes unseen. It’s dumb, I know. To simplify things I’ll just post stuff I draw, and Hallows can post things he codes/writes. We’ve taken out most of the lists of rewards for backers because they’re pretty redundant at this point.
The people still here (thank you, by the way) are probably holding out much less hope than we are for regular updates, so it’s just us at this point — mad at ourselves for not posting enough.
Don’t worry though! There’ll still be the same things for backers that we post already, but we’re not going to over-promise and under-deliver anymore, it’s probably not good for anyone. We’re not going to do the scheduled monthly update thing, it’s just not how we make stuff, and it stresses us out. (I think Hallows would be more polite about it.) Hopefully we’ll post more often. Let’s see. Life is messy. We’re just going to post whenever we’ve made something for the game, simple. It’s an informalization. (I thought I made that up but, turns out that’s a real word)
Making indie games… takes a long time! And we’ve been so ambitious with Joystick Bliss, so it’s blasting through every projected due date we set. But there’s a lot here, and we can’t wait to finish an alpha version for people to take a look. What you can expect from us in the mean time is shorter, more relaxed posts.
As always, thank you. Speak to you again soon.
