That is a SUPER bad deal and one which is nearly unheard of these days. Is this an internship through the university? If it is, it makes the suggestion that he should take a semester off even more ridiculous since it's the fact that he's doing it through the school that makes unpaid internships legal in the first place. He has to be getting university credit for working there: otherwise, it's like having unpaid labor and that is super illegal in the United States. We fought a whole Civil War about whether you were allowed to do that. The only conclusion I'm left with is that Cooper is sadly too stupid to know that he's being taken advantage of here.
