It can be inferred from the group meeting at the bar that they grew incredibly close over the years, or they wouldn’t have had the dynamic Chelsea acknowledged, which created the first big rift they had since the slug incident. When they argue in front of Andy’s house, she says she has noticed them fight and make up many, many times since then. There are several subtle hints throughout the series that require reading between the lines.

Other than that, he's basically been putting up a defense the entire time he's known Andy. As much as I want them to kiss, Cooper has a lot of growing up to do before he even approaches Andy's level. This is an excellent comic!
