With the release of the Thousand Year Door remaster just around the corner, I thought I'd do some investigating to see just how the character of Vivian was handled in the remake.
For fans of last year's Pride Month video, you may recall that Vivian's status as a transwoman has long been a matter of controversy, being hinted at only in certain localizations, and outright confirmed in only the Italian localization. The American localization completely excised this plot-point.
Well, it seems that the Italians have won, and Vivian is a confirmed transwoman in the remake's localization. This is a substantial win for trans people on its face, but the change (the repair? the return to form?) also brings a more compelling character arc to Vivian that was wholly absent from the original American localization.
Maybe we'll do a short video on the topic for Pride Month this year: great timing, no? We'll take a look and see just how each localization handles Vivian, and compare the remake's handling of the character with the original localizations, perhaps.
Let me know what you think about that topic! As always, it's a pleasure to hear your thoughts.
