Thank you for sharing these! The part about how the universe might be beyond our comprehension is particularly delicious. Marcelo Gleiser’s The Island of Knowledge is a fun read on this topic. Here is a quote from its blurb: “These limits to our knowledge arise both from our tools of exploration and from the nature of physical reality: the speed of light, the uncertainty principle, the impossibility of seeing beyond the cosmic horizon, the incompleteness theorem, and our own limitations as an intelligent species.” I do have a critique on one part of your take, though. I think the “ant trying to understand Shakespeare” analogy is not only ineffective, but can also be harmful. It carries a pretty strong theological vibe by hinting at the existence of a higher intelligence that understands or even created the universe. I also call myself an agnostic for the same reason you do, but the kind of analogy I’d go for is more like “a Homo erectus trying to understand the theory of general relativity.” I’m not saying we can or can’t understand everything in time. It’s just not my place (or anyone’s tbh) to conclude either way. But I am saying that we can understand more over time (could it even be that we evolved to do this? Single-celled organisms survive and reproduce just fine); and that we, as currently existing humans, are a huge part of this process and play a crucial role in it. “As knowledge shifts, we ask new kinds of questions that couldn’t have been anticipated.” “And as we see more, the more we know there is to see.” I’m having a pretty bad headache right now, so I'm not able to explain myself too well. But I’m very confident in your ability to give my take a charitable read, so I’m counting on your own knowledge and intuition to defend my point for me in your head :D.

2025-08-02 22:57:43 +0000 UTCWhat if the universe isn't uncaring, but malevolent. Isn't that more Lovecraftian? Almost gnostic... you're gazing into the void while a monster is creeping up behind you.
