It irks me to no end when people say “my truth” but are they actually being quiet Nietzchian?

2024-12-24 08:50:45 +0000 UTCI think the statement “losing faith” is valueless to a truth-seeking person. Philosophers "submit to truth" because their primary goal is to *actively seek* and *understand* what is *true* through critical examination and analysis, aiming to uncover the underlying reality of concepts and situations, even if it contradicts their own preconceived notions; essentially, they strive to align their beliefs with what they believe to be objectively true, if you have faith in the existence of objective truth.

2024-12-24 08:44:07 +0000 UTCHappy holidays, from atheist to atheist. Thank you for your great content. I wish I would have found you sooner. You have a great ability to transmit core philosophical points of mankind's greatest thinkers without dumbing them down. In the modern fast-paced age, this is adequate and necessary, thank you again.

2024-11-26 22:57:35 +0000 UTCHe is welcome to not answer, of course. I ask this of almost everyone I encounter, online & off, and most people are happy to share the info, so in my experience, it’s not rude. Generally people enjoy getting an amateur reading, and it’s a great way for me to learn, as a student of astrology. And I’m not interested in asking silly questions. I think it’s perfectly reasonable for someone to want to understand the person they patronise, and I find astrology very useful for understanding other people.

2024-11-26 22:51:20 +0000 UTCHi, Joe. Question: What is the origin of the idea that we have a “right to life”?

2024-11-26 21:51:18 +0000 UTCHey! I have a simple question I’d love your thoughts on. Why do you think people feel lonelier these days? Also, what do you think about self-improvement trends that suggest cutting people off to grow—do you think it’s really about improving or just an excuse for more loneliness? :)

2024-11-20 19:16:02 +0000 UTCIf the existentialists believe that existence precedes essence, what about how we are shaped by our own genes. Are they on the side of nurture only in the nature vs nurture debate? Maybe it’s a silly question but I just don’t understand how genetics and innate personality traits can play into this.
Kate K
2024-11-17 16:00:57 +0000 UTCHey, don’t you think that’s unsolicited and invasive to ask an internet stranger? I love astrology as much as most people, but Joe is…just a guy. At best, he owes us nothing. At worst, he could just give us his birthday and maybe the year if he feels comfortable with that. Wouldn’t it be better to ask a silly question like “what do you do first: brush your teeth or wash your face?” or “what’s your favorite fruit?”

2024-11-15 04:28:24 +0000 UTCI heard you talking about moral intuition and the factor of disgust in your memes video. Have you read Jonathan Haidt’s book The Righteous Mind? It’s one of my favorites and hits on the topic quite well with a lot of examples of these types of moral questions for dinner parties. It could make an interesting video.

2024-10-31 23:27:50 +0000 UTCThank you so much for that, I will try to give it a read. I always found fascinating how some people who have struggled way too much in life have coped with it (mostly old people) and when you get to talk to them, most of them already have a sort of philosophy developed that helped them get through very hard stuff, without even knowing what a psychologist was. So maybe facilitating knowledge about philosophy would be way more beneficial, and even cheaper for some people. So yeah (sorry for rambling).

2024-10-31 00:35:29 +0000 UTCYour birth date, place & time (as exact as possible) if possible, so I can take a look at your natal chart. Or, if that is too personal, your Ascendant, Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter & Saturn (i.e. what signs they are in). You could enter the data on astro-seek.com & just show the chart too. Thanks!

2024-10-30 23:14:40 +0000 UTCI think the Pragmatist’s Guide to Life by Malcolm and Simone Collins is a very good philosophical approach to living your best life (and would be more beneficial than most therapy these days, for many). Just finished it & it really impressed me.

2024-10-30 23:07:55 +0000 UTCwhat do you do when you are "losing faith" in the secular worldview? Not that you no longer think it is correct or not, but more like you wonder if it is doing you any good?

2024-10-27 17:27:43 +0000 UTCI also want to know more about what makes us "human" but I'm also interested going a bit further: what makes a "man" man and a "woman" woman according to philosophy and literature? I'm having a hard time knowing what my inherent responsibilities are as a guy, could use the help.

2024-10-21 19:37:29 +0000 UTCHello Joe! Seeing you post a new video genuinely makes my day so much better and thank you for each and single one you post! I have probably one of the vaguest questions : What (in your opinion) makes us human? 《A brief reasoning, I am personally obsessed with a Japanese author Dazai Osamu ( not a philosopher per se but I do find his works quite philosophical ) especially his most famous book "No longer human ". (Couldn't reccomend it enough tough most people find it too dark and depressing). Through this semi autobiographical novel the protagonist struggles to understand humans and the society. I'd say the key points would be : nihilism, search for authenticity, crisis of identity and unbearable isolation. 》 Thank you once again for being so lovely and promoting philosophy :)

2024-10-18 22:26:58 +0000 UTCHey, brother Joe - I'm the "philusteen" in your YouTube comments. 🤓 Here's my question: On YouTube, some wonderful person posted an old lecture by Robert Sapolsky called "the biological underpinnings of religiosity" (I'm sure a simple search will uncover it). To me, it really helps to illuminate "why" religious practices are so ingrained in societies. I wanted to ask you a) are you familiar with it? And separately, b) given that philosophers are inexorably bound to the context of their own societies, what are your thoughts about how an "armchair philosopher" might better come to understand great thinkers by applying a more contextual lens to their works? Thanks for all you do, man - your contributions to the space are ass-kickingly valuable. Hope your back is better! 👍💪

2024-10-18 20:56:36 +0000 UTCOkay, so, I apologize for these very long questions, but I'm just so curious! :( First, why do you think most influential philosophers tend to see women so differently from men? I understand that men’s and women’s brains, bodies, and experiences differ from one another, but could these differences shape how we approach philosophy? I’ve noticed that many male philosophers treat women as a separate philosophical topic, alongside themes like “love,” “meaning,” and “society.” Do you think this is born out of curiosity, or did they truly see women as fundamentally different in their ability to engage with the world? I’m also curious if this is true for female philosophers, if you have any insights on that, I’d love to hear them. Second, do you think that certain philosophies could help some types of psychological issues better than therapies? I have noticed that in my career we tend to deviate more and more from philosophy, but I do think that a closer connection with these thinkers and ways of living could help to improve life more than a general process of "talking about what you feel", what do you think about that? I'm by no means, saying that my career is only about that, rather referring to certain issues why people tend to go to therapy, like existential crises, which can lead to depression, please let me know what you think. And last but not least, out of mere curiosity, have you read anything about the philosopher Otto Weininger? Thank you so much for your attention :^)

2024-10-18 18:02:04 +0000 UTCHey Joe, Quoting Descartes: "It is now some years since I detected how many were the false beliefs that I had from my earliest youth admitted as true, and how doubtful was everything I had since constructed on this basis"; I am now in the perfect place "to rid myself of all the opinions which I had formerly accepted, and commence to build anew from the foundation, … to establish a firm and permanent structure in the sciences." Any advice on how to reconstruct a worldview which is as true to truth as possible? Wishing you a beautiful weekend too :)
