In September, I took a once in a lifetime trip to the Aeolian Islands off the north coast of Sicily. We trekked up volcanos and ate wonderful food. Climbing up Stromboli at night to see it erupting was a highlight. Stromboli has been continuously erupting for at least 3,000 years.
While in Sicily, I loved hearing about all of the myths associated with it. Odysseus and his men were said to have encountered Polyphemus in the Aeolian Islands. Scylla and Charybdis occupied either side of the straits of Messina, the small strip of sea between Sicily and the Italian mainland. And of course there are so many mythological stories about Etna.
I missed recording with Deb and Joseph but it was a special trip that I enjoyed reflecting on in the volcano episode!
