6/16/22 SPECIAL Q&A for Patrons

Hey Patrons,

Here’s the question we explore this week:

“Does the Collective Unconscious have a Shadow and if so, does enantiodromia work at that level? In other words, is there an organic force for (collective) individuation?”

Here’s the link to our discussion:

Thank you for bringing up this question. I have also wondered about this often. As a researcher in the field of sustainability, to be honest I am strongly hoping that there be a process in the collective resembling individuation on the personal level. If it was, there is hope that collective agreement is possible. That is, I think that something like a collective Self could aid us in societal development, by acting as a steering entity. When I was studying the microcosm (i.e. chemistry and genetics), I came to feel that even the tiniest things seem to be organized by a teleological force; which I could not help but Interpret as a Micro-Self. What else would it be that tells viruses to spread, DNA to replicate or cells to divide? Why would they want to do any of this, if there was nothing driving them? Just as humans are more than a collection of biomolecules, but rather entities inhabitated by and striving for meaning, I too think of humanity as being more than a collection of humans, but rather an organism. And hence, it is tempting to attribute to humanity, namely it being inhabitated by and striving for meaning. If that is so, could this process not be a societal equivalent of individuation?
