Great question Lee and fascinating discovery you’ve made about yourself. That takes some real reflective effort to realize what you’ve discovered here. Improv classes might be something to look into. It gets into the acting stuff without the dialogue being the same. It might scratch to performance itch a bit as well. Stand up is so so hard. And magic patter can get old. So it does take certain mentality to try to “make it fresh” for people seeing it for the first time.

I quit standup because I couldn’t get comfortable performing the same jokes over and over. I also haven’t performed magic in a while for a very similar reason. I never considered the “actor” side of comedy and magic. I tried to start from a “jazz” place. It feels more connected to the audience. I like that because, I started magic selfishly, doing it because making people smile validated me. This lead to turning down repeat gigs and eventually stopping all together. How can I get better at the acting? The only way to get better at performing is flight time, and sometimes that means grinding sets. Do you have ideas for reframing the concerns about performing the same bits for the same people?
