In the backyard

My mowing was cut short yesterday. I was riding along when I spotted something moving in the long grass before me. I thought initially that it was a toad, but I was mistaken. It was a baby bird. I turned off the mower, and became aware of the cardinals that were chirping and flapping in earnest. It didn’t take long to figure out that they were instructing their little one to take cover. He was scooped up in a flower pot and replaced into the nest. I didn’t mean to disrupt this family moment, so I gave up on mowing. The lawn in the back remained as it was: half done. Today brought rain and storms. When I collected the eggs from the chicken coop this evening, I looked to the nest. The tree with the nest had been disheveled from the storm, and there on a branch sat the baby bird.
