I mentioned yesterday in my “Taco Tuesday Update” that I’ve been gathering components for the upcoming coyote paintings. I haven’t shared photos until now!
Growing up in New Mexico, hunting isn’t uncommon. I’ve seen everything from bears to elk to turkeys laid in the backs of trucks. As a kid I found it shocking and disturbing to see. I was always a bit sensitive. In the years since, I’ve rationalized it. Hunting is such a deep part of some families and cultures. A right if passage, a means to feed families, and can actually be beneficial to wildlife populations. I am aware of the necessity of keeping populations of deer balanced, for example.
Nonetheless, I cried when I unwrapped the coyote fur. I’m determined to honor that animal. Even though I never knew it personally.
My mind wanders and my mouth smiles just a bit at imagining knowing a coyote personally. What on earth would we talk about?
