Sunday, December 19: Grateful for Tig (and all the ridiculous bright, cute chaos that comes with her.

I looked for images that captured Tig's essence- Bright, cartoonish, chaotic, cute, absurd.

That's my girl :3

Monday, December 20: Grateful for the moon.
My dudes, the moon was stupid bright that night. Like. Whoah. Just makes you stop in your tracks and stare at it.

It was my sophomore year in college (I think) when I took my first bookmaking/letterpress class and I discovered several pages of these imperfectly-printed test papers in the recycle bin. The ink isn't evenly distributed and the overall centering of the print is askew on the paper. They're not usable for someone's final project, for sure, but... C'mon, man. They're too pretty to recycle. If this was my sophomore year, that would mean it was, like, 2003-ish? 2004? That's nearly two decades of storing these papers in my scrap box and lugging them with me from state to state, apartment to townhouse to house. I wonder who made them.

The star hole punch was another tool I picked up in college and have rarely used it until this project.

Wednesday, December 22: Grateful for saving pretty scraps of paper all these years.

Like I said before, I've been collecting pretty bits of paper and the offcuts from my other projects for practically twenty years because this shit is too precious to just recycle (Also, PSA: Paper with glitter or metallic stuff has to be thrown out, can't recycle that).

So yeah, I just reached in pulled out pieces as they were, not extra cutting to make them fit.

Thursday, December 23: Grateful to have stories to share.

The tea box is my brain or my heart or wherever it is in the human body that I keep my stories. The cutout pink flower is a story, and the box is open 'cos it's being released into the world. I was afraid 'flower-emerging-from-box' was a bit too open-ended, as far as interpretation goes, so I added in the monk's hands working on an illuminated manuscript, just to really drive the point home, y'know? THIS COLLAGE IS ABOUT MAKING AND SHARING STORIES.

There was too much empty space above the monk's hands, though, so then I picked out a shiny flower to grow out of his manuscript, thus cementing the message that stories are coming and going all over this bitch. These are the manuscript flower contenders ⬇️ I wound up using the second from the left.

Friday, December 24: Grateful for my fucking awesome friends who encourage me to learn, grow, and make (and vice-versa)

While looking for pictures that could represent my closest friendships, my eye caught on this Vision of a Knight painting by Raffaello Sanzio AKA Raphael AKA the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle with the red bandana and the twin sai. At first I was just like "Oh cool, it's two ladies reaching out with gifts, that'll serve my visual metaphor purposes" but then I read the description beneath them and discovered "The knight is asleep and dreaming about the choice he will have to make between duty, represented by the serious figure on the left, and pleasure, shown by the beautiful woman on the right."

For my collage, the Duty Lady's sword represents "Doin' shit, gettin' shit done, taking action" while her book that she's extending in her other hand means she's freely sharing knowledge, resources, and just some good entertainment with her Best Bitch, Pleasure. Pleasure Lady, meanwhile, is offering a sprig of some pretty plant to her Best Bitch, Duty, because you know what? Best Bitches share their shit, man. And I repositioned the tree to be growing right up between their arms and surrounded them with more glowing growing things, because their love and care for each other is growing, and they're helping each other grow too.

I'm actually really fond of this one, I feel like the symbolism came together way more vividly than I could have drawn up on my own and it really does represent the relationships I have with my closest friends, my Best Bitches. Haha, I was even collecting and cutting out these pictures while I was FaceTiming with Lucy, who is just one of my most favorite people on earth and I fucking treasure our friendship. BEST BITCHEZ 4 LYFE.
