COMIC: Space Camp, First Day (part 2)

Space Camp chronologically so far:

- I'll Be Back For Dinner
- I'm Functional
- First Day (part 1)

For reals, both of us were told either the program would cost $40 a day or $300 a day, depending on how our insurance would pick and choose how to cover it and nnnnnnooooobody on the insurance side OR the program's side could tell us which it would be before we started. Amazing. Privatized healthcare is immoral and should be destroyed.

Jesus. Thank you for elaborating on this, I'm now realizing it would probably be a good addition to my comic to talk about this.

If you cannot afford outpatient with a recommendation then yes you go home. If you seek hospitalization and either do not pass an evaluation allowing you to stay or cannot pay for more than the observation period, you go home. If you are involuntarily hospitalized you are admitted and held till stable but you are responsible for the entirety of the bill and may not have any help from your insurance if you have it depending on the circumstances. It’s ugly. There are also many charities and endowments to help in that case, you just have to know it’s there and have the capacity to deal with it.

Oh right, I guess voluntary is completely different from involuntary hospitalization. The bigger answer is: Our system is completely broken! Yeeesh. I'm glad you were able to find something helpful.

Involuntary hospitalization is a whole different thing from the voluntarily-seeking-hospitalization/IOP route, and I'm afraid I don't actually know anything about it, other than people can have... really bad experiences in the system. If somebody is *seeking* IOP/hospitalization and can't afford it, I think they just... have to go home? Urr, but I don't actually know anything, I haven't researched this!

I'm chronically early for stuff, so I definitely feel that first panel. I'm glad you were able to find someone to commiserate with, even if she couldn't stay.

:O Wait, so... ignore this if you don't want to think/talk about this stuff but... if someone can't afford IOP, would their only option be hospitalization? In a system notorious for being terrible at handling people in mental health crisis? (I think I already know the answer but I don't like it.)
