Drawing on Thrift Shop Books

I went to my neighborhood Goodwill looking for photo-heavy books to harvest for future collages. People donate some fuckin’ nice-ass (formerly) expensive cook books and gardening books and art books and just, dang, big old books full of professionally shot photos that fill up entire pages without text on them. The original prices tend to start at $30 and only go up, but at Goodwill you can score them for $5 and cheaper. Good pickins’ if you’re scavenging for high quality images of plants and people and places on a budget.

So anyway, I picked up this book. (Yoga Bodies; Real Peoplr, Real Stories & the Power of Transformation by Lauren Lipton)

And I picked out this photo (by Jaimie Baird)

And I drew some branches of Lemony Snicket, my potted lemon tree, by referencing a photo I’d taken of her baby lemons last year.

It’s just a ballpoint pen, and I smeared the ink with my hand in one spot a little bit, but now that I say that I’m realizing it’s not as obvious as I had thought it was.
