I had top surgery before ANY insurance covered it, and as someone who was underemployed and uninsured had to go the route of making a public spectacle of myself to raise $$ in addition to going into debt for it. (And I am to this day continually grateful to Queer Community-capital letters- because it literally saved my life by helping me get there.) I’m sorry that Jey’s experience was such that only PART of the cost was covered, but so glad they were able to make it work! I’m currently on leave from my now middle-class, ridiculously well benefited job, and recovering from bottom surgery- which happened in a hospital instead of through a plastic surgeon and which had a multiple year wait list to occur… but for which I only paid a copay for something that was about FOUR TIMES more expensive than top surgery. It literally would not have happened if I did not have access to insurance, and I continue to reflect on the problematic nature of not having universal healthcare and barriers to care for lower income, BIPOC, and other folks who don’t have ready ability to utilize it. Long ramble short: yay Jey! And thanks for sharing! <3
