ART: Ring-tailed lemurs were very popular among upper-class lesbians in the early 1900s

Yesterday, while I was inking tomorrow's OJST comic, I was simultaneously listening to this biography on Beatrix Potter. About halfway through, our narrator just casually mentions that during the early 1900s, it was quite popular among the upper class lesbians to own their own ring-tailed lemurs that one could purchase at this specialty pet shop in London.

Obviously, I had to stop everything to Google this.

Unfortunately, I only found two relevant results: one, a tweet repeating this same "fact", and the second, a TV guide mentioning the show I had just learned this from in the first place.

If any of you happen to have any leads on further researching this topic, PLEASE SHARE THEM.

In the meantime, I will sate my thirst for turn-of-the-century lesbians flagging their sexuality with ring-tailed lemurs the old fashioned way:

By drawing my own fan art.

But first, I had to look up what early 1900s people even looked like in the first place. Fortunately, Google was way more helpful in that field of study.

A friend proposed making the ring-tailed lemur the new mascot of WLW*, so of course now I've got a design idea for that too.

*Women Loving Women, although now I think that, too, could be updated to Women Lemur Women.

Comments

Ah, the ring-tailed lemur, the original ring of keys. (I hope this is real!)

I love this so much!
