I GREW THIS!!!!!!
This is the most successful head of broccoli -or any brassica- that I’ve ever harvested!!!
Wowee-zowee, I’m so surprised!
A month or so ago I collected a scraggly, runny bunch of cauliflower, barely enough for a mouthful, and I just assumed the season for harvesting was over.
Since the weather turned winter, I’ve just... kinda abandoned my garden?
But Matt and I were coming back from a walk around the block just now and noticed that a single plank had fallen off our fence, so we came in through the backyard after we (Matt) put it back in place.
While Matt dealt with the fence, I gave a closer look at my poor neglected cauliflowers and broccolis, to see how they’re coping with the winter weather.
AND THAT’S WHEN I DISCOVERED MY BEAUTIFUL TREASURE!!!!!!!!
Man.
Wow.
How freaking cool.

SIDE NOTE:
I found that pretty dish and its match with a Free sign on them on the sidewalk in The Before Times. Matt was a bit reluctant to take home abandoned dish wares from the pavement but, look, they were in perfect condition, no chips or cracks, so back to our house they went. This is also how I replaced the glass dish-platter in our microwave after it broke— I found another one in a Free pile outside someone’s house. Matt had to wedge a paper napkin in to secure its fit on the little spin-y thing, but it totally works now!
One man’s trash is another Erika’s kitchen supplies!

We've JUST now replaced the entire microwave (and washing machine), so we'll be safe for the next couple years at least ♥

2020-12-28 08:33:46 +0000 UTCRomamesco is amazing, and bsrasicas are very cold hardy so you can leave them in the late fall to grow while the rest of the garden is harvested. The leaves taste kind of like kale by the way. If I remember correctly this is a cauliflower varient rather than broccoli so light frosts are good for the flavour. Maybe double check that instead of trusting my memory tho!

2020-12-28 01:38:31 +0000 UTCThat's quite beautiful. Although it's a romanesco, not a standard broccoli. (Some people call it "romanesque broccoli", and its flavor is somewhat broccoli-ish, but it definitely cooks more like a cauliflower.)
