COMIC: Lost at Sea

Context: This is a comic I originally roughly drew in my sketchbook while I was in the Intensive Outpatient Program for mental health at the hospital last August, and now I've re-drawn it up fresh here because it wasn't really legible before.

(The thing in the second panel about 'keeping ice packs all over the house' is a practice where you can kind of shock your system back from spiraling out after being triggered by rapidly changing your temperature, such as jumping in a cold shower or submerging your face in a bowl of cold water or pressing an ice pack against the back of your neck.)

I'm doing a lot better overall, but this sense of endlessly treading water on an open sea is a feeling that's never far from my mind.

At some point I'd like to make a full graphic novel about going through IOP (Or, as Matt and I prefer to call it: Space Camp), but that feels too big and hard to do all in one go. Right now I'm letting myself just pick and choose individual comics that I roughed out at the time to fully illustrate now. I'm telling myself it's ok if they're not drawn and posted in chronological order, or even in the same template format, the important thing is to just make them at all.

Here's the original sketch:

COMIC: Lost at Sea

Comments

This comic definitely speaks to me, it touches on some of the feelings that I've been trying to process over the last few years. It is very difficult to push away the feelings of hopelessness, especially recently. Thanks for posting this comic, sometimes seeing other people going through similar things makes me feel a little less insane and less alone. Hope you're taking care of yourself the best you can

Thanks for sharing this - I'm always amazed by your courage and openness in talking about your experiences addressing mental health. It makes me feel less alone in the world when I face up to my own challenges.
