Erika Plays in the Dirt

Ok, remember how last year I became obsessed with beets?

No?

Well.

I DID.

It was a spur-of-the-whim thing, I just filled several pots with garden dirt, set 'em up by a kitchen window,  stuck a buncha beet seeds into 'em and then... then they GREW.

I hadn't really thought this through.

The previous owners of our house had installed a handful of grow boxes in the backyard and on the side. Matt and I did absolutely nothing to maintain them for the first four years and even wound up taking out the ones on the side because they kind of imploded in on themselves from the weeds and weather (We think they were slapped together for show, not actually built to withstand the elements) while the backyard ones were just there own self-contained jungle. I hacked away the weeds in the middle box to make a home for my rapidly growing indoor beetlings.

Turns out you're not actually supposed to start beets indoors and then transfer them outdoors but that is exactly what I did and it turned out ok.

This year, though, I decided to play by the rules and actually seed them in that grow box from the start, so on March 29th I once again cleared out that little dirt patch (easier this time around) and then on March 30th I seeded the following breeds of beets (same as last year):
-Red Ace
-Touchstone Gold
-Albino
-Chioggia

This time around I'm trying something different.

No, not a gardening method. I mean: I learned how to make time-lapse videos, which means now I can share EVERY MINUTE OF THIS ADVENTURE WITH Y'ALL. Oh-ho-ho, you thought I over-documented last year's beet development on Instagram? You ain't seen nothin' yet, chum.

You ain't seen nothin' yet.
