Floss and Hoops and Friends

Cross-posted from Instagram (July 17), I accidentally wrote a mini-essay as a caption and I think it's kinda sweet so here it is for you guys, too.

-----------------------------------

I finished the foreground beets! To make them pop above the background elements, I embroidered them with *three* strands of floss, and the then all the background beets and leaves will be sewn with two strands. This probably won't actually make a visible difference, but hey, I'm tryin' it. We'll see how it goes.

The red for the foreground beets is DMC 150 and the background ones (I've only just started the first one) is DMC 815, both of which were gifted to me by @bitchcraaaaft when she gave me her old floss collection. The hoop and the twill tape I used to wrap the inner hoop were given to me by @maybeemily and oh my gosh it's such an improvement from the $1 hoops I was buying from my mega craft store. I forget what wood it is... birch? Is that... is that a thing? In any case it's so much sturdier and the claspy-screwey thing at the top is way more efficient and solid than those flimsy hoops I've been using this whole time. Funny how you learn to appreciate the differences in such seemingly simple materials. If you'd held up this hoop next to my craft store one back when I started embroidering, I woulda cocked my head with a confused expression because aren't they kinda identical? Round wooden hoop with a metal claspy thing at the top, how much difference could there be?

But, I digress. I just... am really enjoying working with materials passed on to me by friends. It makes me feel connected to my little micro community as I hold the same tools that they held and make my own art with the materials that passed through their hands. It'll be invisible to everyone else, but I'll always see a little bit of their friendship sewn into the finished piece.

God, I better not fuck this one up too badly :-/

There's always Shepard's Prayer. You know, "Please God, don't let me fuck this up."

With art supplies, or any tools/materials for that matter, quality makes a huge difference in the outcome!
