Some Dirty Drawings

During the Volume 2 Kickstarter, I offered backers the option to get a book with a sketch for a little bit more money or a "Unique Drawing" for a lot more money. The sketch is a cute little doodle that everyone will get, but the uniques are, as the name implies, unique. Each of those 33 drawings is different, nobody's getting the same design as anyone else. Oh, and a book plate is a fancy, giant sticker-type-thing that backers can stick inside of their books. The beauty behind book plates is that I could sign, sketch, and ink all 300+ of them while they books were still being printed in China, so they'd be ready to ship out as soon as the print run arrives at Topatoco (our fulfillment company). It's much more time effective and cost efficient than waiting for those books to be shipped to my house in Portland from China, draw in the actual book, and then ship that heavy ass book to Topatoco in Massachusetts, where they then would ship it out to backers. As it stands, Topatoco's had all the finished book plates for, uh, a month or so? Maybe longer? (Oh my gosh, has it been two months already?) And as soon as they're ready to start sending out books, all's they gotta do is throw in the right book plate to each order and BLAMO. It's out the door.

Here's 13 of the preliminary sketches for unique drawings I did. Officially there was only 25 backers at that level, but I drew a handful extra in case somebody's package needs to be replaced or something (but hopefully that won't be necessary!).

First I roughly doodled these sketches in blue pencil and ball point pen on crappy printer paper. Next I used a lightbox to trace just the final lines very lightly onto each book plate, without all my extra scratchy bits mucking up the final picture. Then I used a brush and ink to go over my light pencils and voila! Unique book plate illustrations were done.

I can't wait for Topatoco to start sending these puppies out. I can't wait for people to hold this book in their hands. I can't wait. I can't wait. I can't wait.
